electrical problem
« on: June 30, 2009, 12:30:36 PM »

My wife's 05 softail has an issue that is giving me a small fit.
last weekend I notice her brake light wasn't working. when I got it home i checked the following: fuses all good, replaced with new, bulb is good. when i squeeze the brake lever I do not hear the clicking on the relay, replaced that, still nothing. swapped out the
brake light switch. while doing so I noticed the rear resovoir was a little low, I will add a bleed.
if i have power on, and a tester on one of the leads at the brake light switch, shouldn't I get a pulse when squeezing the lever.
any help you can give in this would be appreciated

Larry, didn't look at the electrical digram, but you have two switches, one on the bars for the front brake and one on the pedal, for the rear, so if it doesn't work when either brake is applied, I would assume it's not a switch. You should have voltage on the hot side of the switches with the ignition turned on, if not you need to work backwards, if you do you need to look farther down the circuit.

ok, so if i touch one of the spade connectors on the rear switch with a tester, it should illuminate when I appliy the brakes, correct?

As Talon said, work backwards. You can eliminate or indicate rear half of bike by using a meter between unplugged harness under seat to bulb socket. If  a problem is there check From the bulb socket, connectors at lamp housing, visually check harness under fender, to the plug.
If not, work your way forward. It's easiest to use a process of elimination this way, most of us have been there. let us know what you find.

just discovered that it's not that the brake light Isn't working, it's that it's on all the time.
started to melt part of the lens. so now, what would cause it to stay on. i already checked foot and hand control, and bled the brakes while I was at it. feels to me like something is live shorting.

Check your front brake lever switch, I had this problem with the Sportster, the switch comes on as the plunger comes out, if it doesn't make contact with the brake lever it will be on all the time. You might be able to get something in there to press the plunger/botton in and have someone see if it goes out.

So when you pushed in on it, the light didn't go out? There was a small bracket on mine that just needed adjusting so the lever contacted the plunger. I had to take it apart twice to get it right!

I had that problem back when I had a Yamaha.  It took me 3 days to realize that I wasn't missing a brake light, but rather it was on all the time.  I found that the foot brake was on all the time and loosened the connection to the switch and problem solved.  Of course this happened after the shop put my bike back together incorrectly and never checked the brakes...and of course they did a state inspection as a last step before the bike left the shop.  Anyway, glad you resolved the issue.

there was a tear in the rubber boot, and while pressing on it, it went out, then on, and so on. dealer was closed when I got there so gotta do it asap. the wife informed me at 10 pm last that she wanted to take her bike out to ride with the LOH bunch. she said "can I ride without that switchy thing". i said no. so now I have to hurry the go back. hate that. but , gotta keep momma happy.

no She hasn't, the Grey Ghost scares her, she won't even touch it. She is very aware of this site and sometimes looks over my shoulder to make sure it doesn't become some pick up site.
got her bike all put back together and is running fine. Man her bike is LOUD

Which pipes did you end up putting on hers?  I remember that she liked mine when she heard them.
