Heated Grips
« on: November 18, 2005, 05:49:51 PM »

Someone mentioned that someone else on this board had to replace some heated grips but I lost the post. Who has heated grips on their fatboy? DO you have the stock bars?

I just noticed the 06 has the buckshot grips. Nice! Would be a little cold on the hands though, esp since us fatboy owners will never own heated grips so long as we keep those bars, all versions say will not work with internal wiring.

My dealer installed the Aleron heated grips before taking delivery of the bike, and it does have the 7 year warranty so the grips cary the same warranty. The grips were internally wired in the bars just like on the Ultra CVO. After a year the grips have just recently failed. I talked to my dealer a couple of days ago and if the grips have to be changed I'm going to have them move the turn signals from the bars to below the road lights.

My bike is my sanctuary and after a difficult day at work just a 10 mile ride even in January can relax my emotions. Last January I drove to the harley dealer 8 miles from me to get an oil filter, It was in the lower 20's and I didn't even have the windshield on. You should have seen the looks I got. One guy came up to me and said "man isn't it cold out there?" I told him "yeh its a little nipply".

I don't want to mislead anyone in saying that the heated grips will keep everyone warm enough in unbearable temps. My experience from riding snowmobiles has taught me one thing in cold weather “be prepared”. I really don’t have too much trouble riding when its cold but I feel more comfortable in knowing that the heated grips are there to protect me from frostbite. They do make you feel warmer tho. I can ride a lot of times without the windshield because of them, and I really hate the windshield. I will probably get a lot of people mad at me but there was a time that motorcycles didn’t have plastic or fiberglass on them and I think that is the way they were and still are made to ride. I guess they didn’t have heated grips either but what can I say I’m a wuss I guess.

Reo, it might be worth double checking that with your dealer.  Parts installed at time of bike purchase might be and often are then included in the bike's two year warranty.  But the service contract for the extra five years is a different animal.  It warrants what was on the bike stock, not accessory add-ons.  Whether they were added at time of purchase or not is irrelevant to them.

I think alot of that depends on the dealer. My old dealer in Ohio will cover it if they installed it. Might have problems with a different dealer but that dealer would go out of their way to help out. A good example being they sent me that f'd up fender and are sending yet another one and have not asked for either of the two I already have back so I will get a few bucks back sellin em on ebay.

reo, i would really like to see a pic , if you move your turn signals down. that was one of the first things i thought about when i saw the bike. i really dont like them on the handle bars, it just doesnt look right.
that should also free up some internal space in the bars for the heated grip wires. i was told that they would
have to wire them externally when i inquired about them. yours may have failed because the wiring was too tight with all that stuff running up there. that would be a great solution, and would solve two problems at the same time. thanks [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

The kicker there Scott is that it's really not up to the dealer.  The service contracter's contract specifies what they'll cover.  And it's not accessories.  So if a dealer is going to get mods covered under the service contract they're lieing to someone.  My concern in a situation like that would be that if they'll lie to the contractor to cover my butt then, when push comes to shove, they'll lie to me to cover their own  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

I will keep you posted EAGLE1, I agree theirs a good chance the wiring failed especially since both grips stopped heating. I have the deluxe aux light bar so using the panacia turns below the aux lights will be no problem. I may get the road king looking nacell to give the front end that flh look at the same time. We'll have to hook up this summer as were probably only 50 miles apart.

The contract I was referring to and was purchased before date of delivery was the “Harley-Davidson Extended Service Plan”. The contract when put in force with a new motorcycle purchase puts the warranty coverage at 7 years/unlimited mileage. The whole reason for my purchase of the warranty was because my bike was built with the beta version of the 103 b motor and with all the concerns of the fragile bottom end I thought it was a good investment.

I appreciate your explanation of your interpretation of this plan 2lane but my dealer told me any dealer installed original Harley parts on the bike before dis would be covered just as the bike was built. I have looked over the contract and will have to investigate further but there is no specific reference to dealer-installed items. The plan does say “Accessories Are Covered, Too”, it has a breakdown of what is not covered and my first impression is the grips would be covered. I must admit the guidelines of installing the grips in the bars like my dealer did probably is a problem but they installed them and I was not aware of this before reading the guidelines. From a contractual standpoint I feel very comfortable, thanks for your input……reo

The above statement sparked my interest as I have the paging (old style) system for my alarm that has gone south and thought that because of this statement it may be covered under extended warranty. After looking at contract I do see on inside cover where it says "Accessories Are Covered, Too" and under that it says The Touring Package covers radios, saddlebags, travel trunks and more*" The footnote for the asterisk reads "Please refer to the actual contract Part I (Proof Of Registration) and Part II for specific coverage’s, exclusions and state specific restrictions".

If you look under Section 4 Component Coverage and Expense Reimbursement Package you will see the breakdown for what the "Touring Package" covers. In that I could not find where it would cover grips or my pager, however I do know as has been mentioned before some dealers in the spirit of good customer relations will replace parts that they installed if they do go bad and I've had it done before at my dealership. I'm hoping when it gets warm enough and I can get the bike back to my dealer this will be taken care of in this manner. What I would really like to happen is they give me a credit towards upgrading to the new style pager.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

In the end I guess some dealers will tell you it's covered under your warranty, charge you the deductible, repair/replace bad part, and keep a happy customer. Believe it or not there are some dealers out there like this.

Reo, good luck with getting your grips replaced, and keep your fingers crossed for me when it is time to get my pager repaired/replaced.

It is a better plan than some of the extended car plans I've seen. As you stated Fired00d, section 4 doesn't specifically list the grips or your paging system, however under section 8 in non-covered items I don't see these items listed either. Their is some loopholes in this contract as in any contract, the bottom line is in my case the dealer I bought this bike from sold me the contract sold me the added accesories and will be the determining factor.....reo

for sure, let's hook up, there's alot of good riding places between us. i am so looking foward to putting some miles on this baby. it was chitty timing when i took delivery, the day they called the temps just nose dived.
i could not believe the timing, especally considering how long and hot this summer was. i was only able to put 40 mi on her so far, i sure would like to get out somemore this year. keep your fingers crossed, i dont believe we even got an indian summer this year  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

That is great news on the extended contract coverage.  I'd read the service contract on the last bike and it was specifically the other way.  Quite frankly then just assumed they were still the same.  You just never expect a contract warrantor to make your coverage better.  Should've read the new one before spouting off.  Thanks guys  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Well,

Weather is terrible here so I’m glad I dropped the bike off a couple weeks ago to have the grips looked at. The dealer called me up the other day and said the grips wouldn’t be covered under warranty and gave me a quote of  $636.00. Their story was: their chrome specialist had called me when putting the original quote together a year ago and told me the grips being internally wired would void the warranty. I called the owner and asked him if someone tying up over 35k in a bike with a 7 year warranty would want to jeopardize the warranty approving putting on the heated grips having them internally wired knowing the installation was not compatible. They are currently reviewing the situation and seem receptive to my side of the story, it seems they dropped the ball and were not aware of reference to internally wired bars. I’m going to have the original grips installed for now “sure will miss the heated grips”. I’ll keep you guys posted……reo
