Baffles?  Wild pigs, New rush mufflers?
« on: November 19, 2005, 09:49:15 PM »

I have the Vance & Hines ovals, I really dont like the look much. So, I'm considering the Rush mufflers or a set of Wild Pigs. I see they have removable baffles, and I"m seeing the 1-3/4 baffle mostly. they have 2 inch and 2-1/4. Does anyone here have any experience with these? I have the V&H true duals on order, Arlen Ness, big sucker, I'll be installing the Race tuner with the new pipes, I'm going to map it myself depending on the pipes I get, Hopefully someone here will have  a map for me? But what size baffles? I'm thinking 2 inch? Talk to me guys. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

CVOwner,

I would not personally buy the wild pigs as they suck air up into them causing the decell backfires and such.  I have not tried the rush ones, are you after a look or a type of sound?

The pigs are inexpensive, but not worth the tuning headache the bring to the table.  I would stick with 2 or 2 1/4 at most.  You might try talking to cycle shack (Andy) he should be able to help steer you towards your desired preferences.

CVO,

What didn't you like about the ovals? I have Rineharts and have been thinking of switching too a pipe that better serves the low end torque of the 103. I've always liked V&H and want to stay with the duals.

I dont like the look. I want 2 big bazooka's stickin out the back, good performance, no black tips, just two big circles of chrome with a deep harley sound. I like rumble, not popping or cracking.

Un,

Always good advice, dont forget, I'll be calling you in a couple weeks so (we) can install and map that racetuner, V&H true duals, AC kit, ovals, sitting in my garage. I have the ovals on now and am going to see how I like them with the true duals (as you suggested) Then I'll make a decision down the road. Do you have a map for this setup? I think  you already told me you do. Or, will the ractuner software have one for me? I also will be getting it dyno tuned in january.

CVOwner,

If you like a big can at the end maybe you should try the D&D :)'s they sound good and you can get the falsie to keep the true dual look and you will get performance of a stepped 2 into 1.
Another choice would be to get the Hooker Slip on mufflers.   They are tunable and at night with a little extra fuel in the cell you get a beautiful flame thrower on the decell and they sound pretty good.

I have several maps you can try and see which works the best for you.   I will even have a couple more maps when we get done testing the new Zippers cams that are slated to arrive next week.   I expect the week after Thanksgiving to be a very busy one testing cams :)

Just let me know when you have time to play with the race tuner.

So next summer when I want to slightly upgrade the bike what do you suggest? Cams, etc? I'm sure I'm going to be more than satisfied with it after the ac kit duals and RT, I can only lose my license so fast anyway!

Thanks, Mike

Jury is out with what you can do as of right now until we get the testing done on the packages.

You maybe perfectly satisfied with AC / RT and pipes and then again maybe you will want more after riding it a while hehe.  Can never have to much torque.

In either case wanting more or not I would expect that first thing you would want is a better cam whether you do any of the other upgrades or not.  Here in the near future we will have an answer whether they will release the 2 they have or go back and relook at it.

Now lets say you desire more more more....

I would expect that if you wanted more you would most likely look to put a gear drive cam in, some headwork, and pistons and a schim for the oil pump and quite possibly either have your throttle body opened up or upgrade to a larger one.

I wanted to bump this back up front. How about the SE pipes? How's the sound and performance on them? they look awful good with those double groove tips too!

Well, no offense to those that got 'em and like 'em, but while I really like low, mellow sound at an idle, I'm not real crazy with the way they sound cruising down the road or when the bike is under acceleration.  The sound is just too muffled to me.  Eventually, I'll get my bike dynoed with these muffs on and better be able to speak about the performance side, but the motor does seem to be a little more lively in the upper rpms, than it did with the one-piece SE muffs I was running before, so I do like that part.

Maybe the sound will improve with a few more miles - I only have 1,100 on them right now. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

So, I take it, its just as I thought, not much better than the stock pipes. What's a good slip on? Somebody has to have some pipes like Hooker or Rush or even the stock takeoffs you can get them on Ebay and they have been reworked to 1-3/4 inch baffles. I'm just wondering if I'll have trouble with a map for the racetuner? I wasnt going to have it dyno tuned right away.

On my 106" E-Glide, which was carbed, I've been through enough mufflers to build a chrome fence.  LOL   Knowing I was going to sell the bike at some point, I bought a set of Wild Pigs on a swap meet for $75 just to use when I traded the bike or sold it. One day for grins I decided to put them on and try them out. They turned out to be my favorite mufflers of all that I tried. Rineharts, Ovals, SE II, Bassanni, just to name a few.  With the pigs, you can reverse the baffles or add or subtract packing for a different sound. While they were fairly loud with a good deep Harley sound, on the freeway they seemed to quieten down and touring was great.  Never did I have any popping on decel.  As cheap as they are, they might be worth a try. I just wish they made different styles for different looks.

I just ordered some Rush mufflers for my SE Ultra.  I'm wondering if anyone is using them, how big of baffles they are using-(I ordered mine with 2" baffles with billet end caps using the stock header pipes) and how they like the sound both at idle and while cruising.  Also I"m going with the SERT and SE AC.  Anyone out there with this combo who has had it dynoed?  -Steve G
