HID conversion problem
« on: July 06, 2009, 05:52:01 PM »

I've converted to HID - both low beam and high beam on the dual bulb headlamp, but I have a problem with the HID interfering with the audio system. Worst is FM Radio - pretty well kills that completely, but there's also interference with other stuff, not so bad (garmin has a constant background hum, for example).  I'll try re-routing the HID cables from the ballasts, and making sure the igniters too are as far away as possible from any audio cables, but has anyone else had this problem?

Yep...on an 09SERG.  FM has static, when I switch to the non-HID highbeams it stops.  I've got the tunetrapper hidden antennae and will move further away from the ballasts when I next have the fairing off.  Lots of SERG owners have this setup and I haven't heard but one other complaint.  Also one of my ballasts fails to ignite sometimes...if I switch to highs and back it fires up.  Maybe the offending ballast is causing the static?  Its pretty much "FM" to me.

Hmmm..... I'm hoping it's just cable location, but time will tell.  I'll <groan> take the fairing off again on Wednesday or Thursday and move the cables.

It's probably the shielding on the cables and starters, your talking a couple thousand volts on the starting spike, the automotive sets are not designed for being that close to the audio system. I've worked in auto electronic over twenty years stereos alarm and that kinda stuff, the problem probably isn't a ground loop or alternator noise but the shielding try wrapping the cables and starter in aluminum foil if there is a charge there are products out there for shielding, the one we use is called Mu metal thin lead type sheets with adhesive backing, goggle it for someplace near you to get it or order it. I installed the HD Hid lamp set which is a new bulb lens and a special starter, even with that if the radio is on when i start the bike i get a little whistle until the bulb is started the it stops.

I have a SEUC4 and have 4 HID ballasts going at once sometimes. High beam, low beam (both on at the same time if I choose), left aux light, and right aux light, all switched individually. I get a slight buzz in my headset at intitial start up of each lamp but then it goes away.

Yes, mine is OK now I've rerouted the cables.

You should also make sure that the dealer has uploaded the radio upgrade to your bike.

Radio upgrade, Louis?   I do them myself, but there hasn't been one for a couple of years, unless I missed it....? :nixweiss:
