Im getting ready for another cross country run. The rear drive belt has 73,000 miles on it. No tears, loose teeth, all in all, she looks good. Last year out in the desert she was sqeeling a bit though. so  should I run it ? Or replace before the ride? Whats everyone been getting mileage wize out of the rear belts?

I have 61K on the 05 and 32K on the 04 and haven't changed either one.  My thought is as long as it isn't dried out or starting to show cracks, etc, I'd run with it.

I have heard of people getting a 100k out of a belt. If your really worried they used to make an emergency belt that screws together with allen screws in the teeth. I got a hole from an asphalt rock going through a almost new belt on my 85 fxr. I bought the emergency belt and carried it for years and never needed it. I put at least 40k on with a hole in the belt. Something you want to keep in mind is that if you get high milage from a belt you should change both pulley's with the belt. I learned this from a gates factory rep at a seminar. Believe me when I put a belt on my FXR at 47k due to teeth tore off the belt, the pulley's both had square teeth compared to the rounded look of a new pulley. If you want to get high milage from the next belt, CHANGE THE PULLY'S ALSO!

PS. Not a good idea to be pulling wheelies all day on the hills of San Francisco! That's how I tore the teeth off my FXR belt! Heck of allot of fun but costly!

If your concerned about it, change it.
But my understanding is if you haven't stretched it too far as not being able to make adjustments during service intervals, and there isn't any noticeable damage, cracks, dry rot, etc. You should be good to go.

a friend of ours owns one of these extremely ugly ligth-Blue/silver special edition Evo-FLHTC's for some 200.000 miles now. It's not really a lucky bike, almost every part of it had to be exchanged at least once - except the belt.

I bought a new belt after some 20.000 miles because it had a tiny hole and we wanted to go on a ride through Russia a couple of years ago. The new one didn't even survive the first night.

So with belts you never know 

I wouldn't change a belt anymore unless it shows distinct signs of wear. My last FLHRCI now has some 100.000 miles on the first belt ...

My 00' UC had 83K on it when I traded her in. The belt had a hole in the middle of it for 30k of it and I never had a problem with it. Run it till it breaks and then get a new one. JMHO!

If it's not frayed or missing teeth......run it.  I rode yesterday using one with 108K miles on it.  har!  spyder
