Throttle body problems @ 30,000 miles on my 09 FLHTCUSE4
« on: July 08, 2009, 07:26:53 PM »

I currently have 30,000 miles on my 09 FLHTCUSE4.....It keeps blowing oil out of the air filter element, and dripping, it appears that after it has so much the throttle will stop responding....You will be riding and all of a sudden the throttle does nothing.....I have to pull over take the element off, spray throttle body cleaner inside and then stick a rag into the throttle body and wipe it out....Sometimes this happens between 1-20 times per day....HD dealership has orderd a new one over 3 weeks ago and nothing yet......It has gotten to the point it is very aggrevating....anybody have any suggestions that might help....and why is it blowing that much oil out......

I check my oil all of the time...I try to run it a little below the full mark...I run redline 20w-50...I have a zipper breather....D&D 2 into 1 header-w/ghost pipe....race tuner.....and yes I run it as hard as I can just like I stole it.....Most of the riding I do is on the backroads, byways and scenic routes....I do not do much highway rides....I work at night and I sleep at night at work and then I ride during the weekdays as often as possible....

I may be speaking out of turn here, but not many people on this board, if any, have put 30k miles on an 09 CVO as yet.  So if the miles has anything to do with it, you may not get much feedback.  Congratulations to you, however!!  That's huge for less than a year on a motorcycle.

The oil could be coming from the breathers which means that you have some blow-by.  The oil could be getting by the rings or valves/valve seals...

Check your oil dipstick. Is the tank overfilled? If not, is it low and when you add oil to the full line and ride for a bit does it show the oil as low again? Could be signs of a problem with the oil pump or return lines to the oil tank. Possibly the pump is not returning oil from the crankcase to the tank. Once the crankcase gets overloaded with oil, the pressure from the rotating crank is forcing the oil up and out the intake. This is not a likely scenario but it is a possibility if the oil pump is going bad or a return line is somehow blocked.

I would recommend not riding it until they open the cam chest and check things out. Hopefully its still under warranty. Good luck.

An astute observation there SADUNBAR.
Was wondering when someone was going to bring that up.

Just found this thread. 30k on an 09 you are the man!!!! Your dealership tech is smoking crack!!! Have them do a leak down test on your bike first. If it is OK open up the cam cavity. As said above you may have a oil pump going bad or the "O" ring going into the crank case may be bad! It is hard to say exactly where the problem is but it is not your throttle body! I PROMISE!!!!!

Good luck!

Not that it matters, but I would concur.

Tell me how a Throttle body is responsible for oil blowing out the a/c?

I do not understand that at all.

I had a similar problem with my 03 tc88 and the stealer told me that the oil pump was not aligned properly and would not allow the oil to drain back into the bottom of the motor at the proper rate. At the time i thought their explanation was b.s. (still do actually) but the problem never reoccurred.

Theres been a bunch of bikes with a similar problem. The heads vent back into the throttle body. not sure on your bike where the vent enters the backplate. most of the aftermarket backplates vent directly into the tb. Id clean it up and keep an eye on it :bananarock: no panic yet!

Or route the vents to atmosphere or a catch can away from the intake and at least you shouldn't have the mess at the TB (just somewhere else unless you use a can).

his backing plate is not the stock backing plate that comes on the bike...but congrats on the 30K miles...of course in Texas everything is bigger, and farther apart

I installed the Heavy Breather on my SERG at 1000 miles and the breather was already seeing oil.  It would have been (and probably wont be much longer) dripping out of the element in a few hundred miles.
This has been a Harley gremlin for years but I cant say that I've ever heard an official reason why so much oil gets through the breather bolts and floods the air cleaner.
It actually happens to every vehicle but typically it is suppose to be sucked back in and burned.  You can even find hints of oil on the butterflies of most any vehicle.  I dont know if it's too much internal pressure or even vacuum.
But again,  it would be nice to have a definitive fix.

Do the 110 CVO engines have a high volume oil pump or is it the same as the 96???

First check is your oil level to high.
