Brand new, 315 miles, towed home!!!!
« on: July 12, 2009, 05:35:26 PM »

I was taking my first long trip today, when the bike started to surge and burp.  My oil pressure gauge was pegged at 60 psi, and my alternator read zero.  Since I was 70 miles from home,
I checked the oil, the battery connection, the alternator connections, etc. Nothing helped.  After it cooled down for about an hour, it started right up, ran for a mile and died.  This time the throttle was dead too.  In another hour it started, and I was able to get it into a trailer and headed back to my dealer.
Anyone have anything similar happen?  It seems electrical, but also related to temperature.  I'm hoping I can give the dealer a heads up, and get her back quickly.
Thanks.
Gary

This is one of the problems with having so much stuff controlled by solid state electronics. It could be one resistor or diode causing all these problems. In the old days mechanics were much easier however some things were not as efficient. T.

At one point my gauges were flopping from max oil pressure / zero volts, to zero oil pressure max volts.  My buddy riding behind me said my tail lights were flickering, and my gas gauge went from half a tank to full.  Pisses me off when I think of how well I had my 05 dialed in.  Starting all over again.

Yeah it does piss a fella off when this kind of stuff happens. Hopefully it will be easy to find. I hope it is not one of those things where you bring it in and they can't duplicate the problem. When that happens they check the most obvious and send you on your way. The problem for you then is you have no confidence in the bike and become afraid to go anywhere on it. T.

The dealership found the problem.  Some pinched wires and loose ground connections in the fairing.
Now they're telling me the Moco is denying the towing bill.  Leaving now to go chew some a$$.

Don't know the answer so forgive the ignorance of the facts behind the question.  But does HD's original bike warranty say anything about covering roadside service and towing?  Just because every major automotive mftr does anymore doesn't mean Harley does.

Based on nothing more than faint recollection I didn't think HD's factory warranty ever covered road side towing or assistance.  Could be mistaken.  But if it was never part of the promise it's tough to kvetch about not getting it.

I would think the free HOG membership would cover that.  I know that the gave me an additional year with the purchase of my bike.

I gave the sales mgr an earful, and he said don't worry about it, I'll make some calls..........
Didn't cost me anything.  I think they do that cause some people just pay.
Hog would only cover $100, my towing bill was for $258.

When the MOCO pays, they (or just about any of these tow paid up companies) are only obligated to take you to the closest dealership, not necessarily the one you want to go to. $258 for towing a breakdown is very high, even here in Florida. Has to be a long tow or owner request.
Whatever the deal, good luck on getting it paid.
