I-90 to Sturgis
« on: July 14, 2009, 05:24:10 PM »

Someone in their infinite wisdom decided to tear up almost 44 miles of I-90 between Chamberlain & Mitchell One section alone is 22 miles, with no provisions for pulling off or passing. The speed limit is posted at 65 however, I got behind a vehicle that was doing 45 the entire 22 miles.

If you've ever been to Sturgis & seen the traffic going across the State on I-90, you'll understand what a major PITA this is going to be! I can easily see it becoming a parking lot. Lord help you if there is a crash, as there is no way for them to pull off, no shoulders!!

In the last couple weeks I've been across the State on State Hi-ways 18, 34, & 44. They are two lane, but will be a much better choice (And more Scenic) that I-90.

Hope y'all have fun

I-90 between Sturgis and Rapid City is a big mess too. One side of the freeway is simply gone. At this point most of it is just dirt, so there is no way it will be up in service by the Rally. It will be a giant parking lot since it will only be one lane.

On the other hand, more and more people have learned about Hill City and know you can get to any destination in the Hills from that central point. Plus, they don't gouge you as bad as up in the Northern Hills. Last year in Sturgis, a small botte of water was $5.... Lots of new camping sites around Custer Park and Hill city too...

Ssshhhhhhhh.  Let it remain a secret.  I've stayed there the last fifteen years, don't spoil it.

If you think it's the journey not the destination you don't live in Nebraska.

Thanks for sharing the road info.  We'll be hitting I-90 south of Pierre, staying in Rapid City.  Any other road warnings you care to share?  I promise I won't divulge any lodging secrets - we're doing a hotel in Rapid City anyway.  Thanks in advance - our first trip to Sturgis, assuming MoCo can make my recalled rear wheel right before next Saturday...

Yes, if you see deer or Elk, STOP... cause sure as $hit they will wait till you are right at them to jump right into your path...

Stay well clear of Buffalo (they run up to 35 mph, weight tons, and can total even a bus or motorhome). Do NOT walk out in a field with them to get a better picture.

Stay off the centerlines, head-ons claim lives at rally every year.

Be prepared for anything from 107 degrees to 40 degrees with rain and hail (in the same day).

Since it's your first trip; some things to see are:
Vanocher canyon
Spearfish canyon
Lake Sylvan and Needles highway
Custer state park and especially the wildlife loop
Iron Mountain Road and Mt. Rushmore
Crazy Horse memorial
Deadwood and Lead
Devils tower Wyoming
The badlands and Wall drugs
Oh, and Sturgis if you like drunken crowds, LOL
