Sore back on SERG
« on: July 16, 2009, 02:53:19 PM »

I love my SERG and think its the coolest chit around but I get a sore back in 5 miles of riding, I am 6'1 and 220, I have moved the handle bars down and that was worse, moved them higher and it helped as I am not slouching as much. I just seem to slouch while riding and lean ahead too much, cannot determine if it the seat or handlebar position yet, seems like I need to sit back farther. Any suggestions, has anyone else had this and what did you change?  thanks,  Scott

Have you tried some type of back support belt? - I have one that is elastic with Velcro

Get a different seat with a back rest and your back problems will go away. Harley just came out with a new solo touring seat that has a back rest and is very comfy. There are many two up seats that also have a back support.

scatla,
First off welcome to the site glad to have you join us. :2vrolijk_21: When you get a chance you should go to this board - New Member Introduction and start a thread to introduce yourself.

In regards to your situation if for any reason you think you might want to change the seat you'll want to do that first and then you might need to change the bars too. Many have done both to dial the bike in for them, and some have been able to ride w/what came stock. The reason I say do the seat first as it might change your position (put your further/closer to handlebars... lower/higher to the ground) and you will want to have that done before you change the bars or you might end up having to change the bars twice. I must ask do you have back problems to start with??... 5 miles seems awful short distance to start having pain. :(

HD makes a matching buffalo hide driver backrest that is a quick detatch.  Ther is a bracket you mount under the stock seat and then the backrest for the driver slides right down in the slot in the seat.  One of the first things I bought for my 09 FLTRSE3.  I love it!

I've had a bad back for years. First thing I added to my SERG was the matching back rest. It's great, I can ride of hours with no discomfort. It can be removed in under 10 seconds and stored in the saddle bag.

Look into Road King I or Road King II bars.  They come back towards you and let you sit back rather than lean forward.

I also have back problems but by adding a HD riders backrest i get less pain on the bike than in a car ! look at the range before you decide mine has both height & rake adjustment and removes in 5 seconds a large steel bracket fits to the rear fender under the seat i have a SEUC not sure what fits yours hope this helps................. its a transformation i wont ditch mine anyways

This riders back rest is to the cats a;;s, does not push me me up on the tank as the larger backrest do. Matching backrests.  Doc

If you aren't sure if the backrest will help or not, first go out and pick up a fat woman to ride on the back.  If that helps, go trade her in at the closest dealer for a backrest.  Don't forget to give her cab fare.

I tried riding without my backrest for the first time in a while last week.  My back was already sore after about a 14 mile ride to the dealer.  I took a 500 mile ride a few days later with the backrest on again, and I could have easily gone another 500, with no back pain.  My advice is to get a backrest and don't leave home without it.

Also, the advice above about changing seats and handlebars also applies.  I made the mistake on my 07 Road King.  I changed the handlebars immediately upon purchase.  After finding out how much the stock seat disagreed with me (backrest and all), I had to make a seat change, which necessitated another handlebar change.

It's difficult to determine if you are purchasing a seat and bars that will be comfortable for you by just looking at them.  Get out to some bike nights and hopefully you will find some bikes that are the same as yours with different handlebars and seats.  Don't hesitate to explain to the owner your situation and ask if you can sit on their bike to try out the feel.  At least in my experience, I haven't run into anyone that minded a bit.  When I owned a VStar, I saw a photo of someone's bike on a forum with a Mustang seat and he was fairly local to me.  I actually contacted him to ask if we could meet so I could try out his seat.  I ordered that seat as soon as I got back home from sitting on his bike.  I ended up making a good riding friend out of that also.

Why does he have to give her cab fare?  If she's stuck somewhere, isn't it HER problem?

probably stuck EVERYWHERE.
around town I take my backrest off, no problems with my back, but on trip, better believe I got it on and set for cruising.

I suppose you could just make a run for it while she's window shopping at the snack machine.

I agree with all the posts that say the riders backrest will substantially improve your ride by reducing the back pain.  I had the same problem, put the backrest on and it's 100% better.  I just ordered a C & C seat so will probably be putting my current seat and matching backrest on Ebay.  If you're interested in the backrest, send me an PM and we can discuss.
