The warm up is not for lubrication purposes it is so THE ENGINE WILL GROW. The engine will grow somewhere up to 25 thou. If you start the motor and just get on it you risk blowing rocker box, head or even base gaskets. Do yourself a favor let it idle till your rocker boxes are warm to the touch.

Be Safe

Always warm my bike prior to riding, I check for leaks during the warm up, typical Harley Rider.

I live in Las Vegas NV, my rocker boxes are warm to the touch from May - October (Ha Ha)

I do as Gordy does.  Wait at most-less than a minute.  Warm up with the bike.  I respect everyone's opinions and may wait longer as suggested.

I do the same as Gordy and Boatman.  One thing I have noticed is that since ethanol gas has become the standard my engine is pinging alot more.  I may try some of the octane additive.

I will say that the bikes warming up in Maggie Valley 07 (Rocky Waters motel) did shake the windows pretty good and sounded great!

You should've been in my room next to Chip & Nancy at 0600. Worse than the rooster at CHL.  ;D

when i first got my 07 i developed a case of oil carryover  :(

the moco fixed it - broke the new rings in on the dyno, works perfect  ::)

they [the factory rep dude] also told me to NEVER let it sit and warm up cold in the driveway - to start it and drive slow in first or second for 3 or 4 blocks so that when the oil is cold and there is still air in the passages from being cold the engine has air flowing over it to prevent overheating the rings.

once its warm they said that idling was not much issue as the oil is all warmed up, flowing, and cooling the pistons properly.

so, right or wrong, i never warm it up, i start it and as soon as there is oil pressure i ride away the 5 blocks from my house to where the speed limit goes up and let it be.

its now been 3 full years and it still doesnt leak a drop

i pull a sidecar so i work the bejezus out of the thing - and its been trouble free since then.

Big air cooled engine equals let it warm up to allow the internals to expand to the correct working tolerances, in addition I always let the tyres warm up before aggresive riding anyway.

Just think how long it takes the engine oil to get to full working temperature even though the engine may have been running at fast idle for a few minutes.

I wait till the engine temp hits 100 degrees and take it easy. We can all tell when it's warmed up  :2vrolijk_21:

Get on it, start her up, make sure she is running good, put her in gear and drive off, taking her easy for this 10 miles or so. Don't rev her hard until the motor is warmed up well. I live fairly close to a highway on ramp and know of a few neighbors that get on their bikes start em put em gear hit the highway 2 blocks away and hit their rev limiter in every gear.. I cringe knowing knowing they are doing major damage on that poor cold motor. Just take it easy on a cold motor  :2vrolijk_21: Get about 10 miles on and when you feel the heat between your legs, your are good to goooooooo.

my girlfreind works the same way

I was in Vegas last week, Tuesday to Saturday.  It was almost 110 degrees each day.  I flew a glider in Jean , NV and it read 120 degrees at the airport.  At 8000 feet, it was nice and cool.
