Oil filter -- change it or not?
« on: July 18, 2009, 11:26:05 AM »

Getting ready for the ride to Sturgis, and I always start with fresh fluids.  Did LOF with Redline 20W50 about 2,500 miles ago & changing to fresh 20W60 for the trip (about 4,000 miles round trip total).

3,700 on the odometer -- I'm just not wanting to deal with the oil filter mess.  It really should be OK to just do the oil, no?

To avoid 99% of the mess, before removing the filter, I use a wooden paint stick to force 4-5 paper towels under the filter near the mount. After the filter is removed and the oil has drained from the mount, remove the paper towels and then install new filter.  This catches almost all of the old oil and makes the job much cleaner.

I wouldn't think of changing the oil and not the filter. IMHO it would be like having a shower and putting dirty underwear back on.

OK, I'll try the paper towels.  Last time I tried the baggie over the filter beforehand & it was better but I still made a mess.

And ALRIGHT DARNIT I'll replace the filter.... !

Punch a small hole in the end of the filter on the bottom and let it drain out , much less fluid and it gets tossed any way!

i installed a jerry riggs remote filter mount

now the filter is vertical so when its removed the oil stays in it

and its beside the frame so it does not drain all over the frame, regulator, mounts

and i connected the oil cooler to the same lines

im very happy with it.

Reduce the mess from changing the oil filter by drilling a hole in the top & bottom of your oil filter wrench (the bottom hole should be as low as possible on the face of the filter) so you can punch holes in the filter to drain some of the oil before acutal removal.  Use a plastic bottle cut out lengthwise to funnel the oil to the catch pan.  Don't just punch the holes in the filter without using the wrench cause it might distort the edges and prevent the wrench from fitting onto the filter.  If you like to change your oil early, what is wrong with changing the filter just every other time?

From previous reading of tech articles, I prefer to use specific transmission/primary case oil in my tranny and primary case.

Jagg's offset oil cooler adapter moves the filter out a little which make it a lot easier to access and to get rags under the filter.

I agree with most of the board---ALWAYS change the filter when you change the oil. Even changing the oil early means you are just filtering clean oil with a somewhat dirty filter--why bother!!!!
