Best time to ride Blue Ridge Parkway
« on: July 23, 2009, 01:09:32 AM »

The Blue Ridge Parkway is on my "bucket list" for rides.  I could use some help from locals to find out what time of year is best to ride this area.  Having spent some time in Cincinnati area, I know that one needs to respect the seasons more so than here in So California.  From your expertise, when can I get the best weather?  Would love to hear your opinions.

The leaves are changing colors mid sept. to early/mid oct. but this year who knows, I live in Knoxville, Tn and we have had weird weather, we have not had any days in the 90's this month, last week end we had 50's sat., sun., and monday for overnight low's and you can bet it was at least 10 deg's cooler on the Blueridge. We took a short ride last sunday and had to have jackets on.

I would say anytime but dead winter (snow/ice). In the spring you will see everything "greening" back up and all the spring colors. In the fall you'll see the bright orange/yellow of leaves changing. In the summer when it's hot everywhere else it's usually 10/15 degrees cooler up there.

There are a lot of members that live near Blue Ridge Parkway & Skyline Drive so let us know when you riding it if you want some local company on your ride. :2vrolijk_21:

There are websites you can check to hit the "best" leave change times...spectacular when you hit it dead on.  Spring is neat also as the leaves come out, but not as nice as the fall.

I am moving back up to NoVA this week, when you plan to be out there so make sure you post if you are going there - I am jonesing to ride the Skyline Drive...

I LOVE the Shenandoah and the Blue Ridge mountains, plan to retire somewhere around Luray (and still winter in Florida)

Would very much appreciate and welcome some "local" riders.  I will post when I've locked in some dates.  Really thinking about this fall and will do some research to see when the color change is anticipated  this year.  Late Sep/Early Oct....should I anticipate much rain?

Muley has a cabin he rents up there. Somewhere there was a thread about it (* hint, hint d00d  ;D). That might be the best way to see the area.

I checked out the cabin site.  Wow, that looks awesome.  Will make sure that works into the route plan.  Thanks

I have been in the field in VA in October many times...have had freezing cold nights, rainy days - but some of the most beautiful Indian Summer days imaginable...  Tend to remember those more since they are usually spectacular.

Does rain enough to warrant care in your gear selection - rainy and 50 are not much of a stretch

Living along the BRP if I would suggest May through Oct. Either end of that window you may have some cold weather but not so cold that extra layer in the morning or evening won't keep keep you warm. Late May and early to mid Sept are my favorites. Usually great weather, light jacket, and little traffic. Summer months and October with the leaves tend to bring more people.

If you have any questions about the rental cabin let me know.

Thanks Mulley.  I'll be calling you soon.

I'll look forward to hearing from you and meeting you as well. When planning your trip plan at least one extra day in our area and I'll show you around.
