Add to CVO Street Glide or "Detach" CVO Ultra
« on: July 25, 2009, 04:33:58 PM »

So, I'm torn and looking for advice. Odds are very good that Monday I will order a new CVO bagger. If I get a FLHXSE, I will want to add detachable lowers and a Tour-Pak. OR I could get a CVO Ultra, make the lowers detachable and use the detachable kit for EG Standards to detach the Tour-Pak. (Going with a Hawg Wired system with amp on either bike, so that takes care of the amp on the Ultra)

I am really torn between these two option and need the benefit of your experiences.
Thanks in advance.

Interesting.  You're going to have to list for ea. bike what has to be taken off/added and figure from that info the best starting platform. I like where you're headed with this though. ;)  har!  spyder

Spyder,
It's more about how hard/problematic it is to detach the Ultra's tour-pak. And, of course, it's a lot more weight than a simple detachable tour-pak added to the Street Glide. Any thoughts?

WOW.....That is a hard one but even harder yet it the choice to make between the two different rear ends.  I have loved the look of the 2009 SERG new rear end so I think I would go for the SESG and add the tour pack of your choice. I see they now offer 3 different size paintable and I believe the leather one too. Then you can buy new or used lowers and get them / have them painted.  I think the you may need to ponder what type of riding you are going to do and think about how important the tour pak is etc... If I remember correctly you might have to get or change the engine guard on the SESG to fit the lowers.

Just my $.02

I have an 09 SG and went over and over this same dilemma with the ULTRA. I finally decided on the SG because I wanted the clean SG fenders, not pin strips and different hardware for the floorboards. Then I saw a SESG a few weeks ago until I got close enough to see that it was a SE ULTRA without the tourpack and lower fairings, and with a SG seat and windshield. The only things that didn't look SG were the mirrors and rear fender. Actually the seat looked like a CVO seat in a SG cut. Not sure where that came from. I was sold and I'm looking to get the SE Ultra now. I joined this forum so I could learn more about the CVOs. But unlike the comparison of a SG to an Ultra, the SE Ultra is a SG with a just a couple of minor differences. If the fender is a problem for you, buy a SG fender and have it painted. Save the other one for when you sell it.

In your thinking you also need to consider that SE Ultra has a higher seat height. Therefore when you ride your center of gravity and seating position will be slightly different then on SE SG. That is why I am planning to go for SE SG rather then Ultra.

My thought is to go w/the Ultra and strip down for the following reasons...

SESG has moustache highway bar if you want to add lowers you'll have to change that to a regular bar (I believe this to be correct :nixweiss:).

Rear passenger has pegs instead of floorboards (floorboards will be more comfortable if you planning on having a BSR)

Inner fairing on Ultra is paint matched to bike (SESG isn't)

Don't really like the painted cowbell on the forks vs. chrome ones (I've got serious OCD :D)

Going w/Ultra you'll have driving/spot lights also giving you more forward visibility.

These are all just my opinions and you know what they say about those. :D :D

Back on topic... I'll loose the TP before having to start all over again customizing a SESG to my tastes. Besides, I couldn't give up the communications of the command vehicle I currently have.

Thinking about this a little more, the Ultra may have a higher resale value later BUT you will never get the money out that you put into a SESG. Even if you add lowers, you will still be selling a SESG not a SEUC.

True Spydy, but how much do you think he's going to drop on the SESG to personalize it? I've got well over $5K in mine.

This is a Good point to consider.  I agree with AJ & Dood go with the Ultra and make what you don't like detachable.  I have removed my tourpack and installed a solo seat with pillion so I can ride solo.  When my wife rides 99% of the time I just put the tourpack back on for her comfort, the lights and communications I have made plug n play so I just plug and unplug as needed.  You can do the same thing with the lowers even with the HW setup.  I like my lowers on so I have never considered making them detachable but it would be easy.

Install AK-20s and Bitubos and you are done.  I can change from solo to 2up in about 10 minutes.

I think the $5000 difference you would easily spend buying the accessories for the Street Glide, actually you would probally end up spending more.

In the end though it comes down to what color scheme YOU LIKE - If you like the way the Street Glide Paint scheme looks then that is the bike for you and add the mods -If you like the Ultra paint scheme better than choose that.  I bought the Orange & Black 07 Jester because I LOVED the way the bike looked.  Even with the issues I have not considered trading it and I have NO regrets.  I spent the money to get the bike the way I wanted it and I Love it!  Alot of other members have Beautiful bikes that have bought and feel the same way.  Until Harley comes out with another bike that has a paint scheme and accessiories I like better I  have NO desire to trade.

The Great News IS Either way you will have a NICE Bike! :2vrolijk_21:
