Tour pack emblem removal, Suggestions????
« on: November 27, 2005, 12:54:18 AM »

I have got to remove the SE Road glide emblem and need some suggestions, if anyone has done this before let me know how you did it, I tried some light lifting with a small screwdriver and its on there pretty darn good. I dont want to ruin the paint.

Visit your FLAPS (friendly local auto parts store).  The goo on the back of those is like the stuff used for body side mouldings on modern cars.  I've forgotten the name of the goo remover; but they'll have a removal agent that won't hurt the paint that'll start breaking down the adhesive.  If FLAPS doesn't have it try an automotive paint supplier.

Nylon fishing line and then clean it up with alcohol.

Yep, that has worked for me in the past.

I also used a label remover spray (which sounds like what twolanerider mentioned) to soften the adhesive first - didn't harm the paint at all

You probably could get that from Radio Shack or similar or you could try

1613 Label & Adhesive Remover from these guys  http://www.techspray.com/

You gotta be soooo careful if you try to prise the emblem off with a blade - as I discovered on a previous bike - it's too easy to crack the enamel infill. >:(

Cheers

You might try WD40, it works pretty good on adhesives.

It really does, suprisingly well actually.  But that stuff actually intended to break down adhesives works a lot faster.  And ain't none of us too patient.

So get yourself some goo remover and then use JC's string.  Well, I mean, not actually JC's string as I'm sure he plays with his own.  You play with your own string dammit.  This isn't that kind of a site anyway!

Try heating the emblem with a hair dryer first, then peel it off.  Use the adhesive remover to remove any residue left on the paint.  This also works for those annoying warning labels stuck all over the bike.

I agree with JC, fisshing line to get the emblem off and then I just use my thumb to peel off the adhesive, of course at times I take off a layer or two of skin too !!!

Most marine (nautical, not Semper Fi) supply houses have adhesive removers in spray bottles. Smells like lemon plege spray wax or something, but works fine. As already said heat it up first, use fishing line, etc. Ever count the silly warning labels on a new scooter, almost need a two hands. Gubbermint werking fur ust. :o

Hey....CVOJOE, what's the penality/fine for removing those 'warning labels'?  It's not as stiff as the one for removing the mattress tag, is it?  Har!  [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif] spyder

Damn - you mean I wasn't supposed to cut off that mattress label?  Maybe I can blame the wife or the dog when the mattress police show up. ::)

I just thought of something; those warning labels are a reaction to our over-litigious society looking for someone else to blame for a lack of common sense.  What happens when the person using the product can't read?  Will we start seeing warning labels with little pictures and icons instead of words?   [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

How come there aren't any labels underneath the scooter seats? I mean how are we supposed to feel protected and comfortable at the same time without govt. intervention? Last good one I saw was on a hose nozzle, warning said: "Do not spray into electrical outlet." DUH !  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

I was on a flight a couple of weeks ago and the guy next to me owned a ladder manufacturing company. He told me every one of the 20+ warning stickers on their ladders were due to a lawsuit they had lost. The worst was a farmer that put a ladder on top of a frozen pile of cow dung, he did a little repair to the roof of his barn and when he started down, the sun had come out and the dung had thawed just enough for the ladder to break thru. He fell, he sued and he won 250K. Now the have a sticker warning not to stand ladders on any frozen materials. [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]
