FXSTSSE3 Buying Advice
« on: July 28, 2009, 04:57:48 PM »

I've been looking for a used 2009 FXSTSSE3 that is built for California but have not found any.  Now I think I will have to buy a new one and take the hit on immediate depreciation as I drive out of the dealership.  There are two dealers in my town that have the black and emerald green CVO Springer that I want.  I have been able through my internet research to estimate the ready to sell price for these bikes, it might not be exact but it should be close.  Any advice on how I should try to persuade the dealer to give me his lowest price?  Anyones experience would be helpful.  It's not that I'm cheap but once my wife sees the payment amount she will jump my butt.  :drink: Makes me want to drink, sometimes.  Thanks for your help.

Talk with the Dealership. They know that the 2010 are arriving as we speak. That and the Economic situation should help. But I would not expect but to get suggested MSRP. They might through in money for Harley clothing and stuff like that. Good Luck with that and the wife.

I agree with Jeff, try to bargin for the best deal. If they won't discount the bike (doubtful), maybe they could discount parts or an extended warranty.  :2vrolijk_21:

Thank you for the advice.  There are two dealers with FXSTSSE3 2009's and two dealers with FXSTSSE2 2008's that I know of that are fairly local.  I just need to see who is hungry, or hungrier.  I'm still open to buying a used bike, maybe even a 2007 with low miles.

I agree with everyone who posted.  I purchased a 2009 springer in Febuary of this year, and harley was not doing good at the time.  They had laid off some of their employees, and a lot of others had to go to part time and I went to three dealerships in Maryland and they really won't do much as far as discounts go on the SE's.  I was able to get 5 year warranty, 10% on parts, and first free service out of them.

They told me that if they discount the SE's it will kill the resale on them, so they don't do it.  You may have some luck with a previous year like the 2008, but since for 2010 they don't even offer the Springer, they might disappear quick at msrp.  Good luck!  It's a great bike and everywhere I ride it people are looking at it and asking questions.

Thank you everyone for your advice.  You were right, the dealers wouldn't move too much but gave me deals on warranty.  Therefore, I put a deposit down on the last green one in the area.  Maybe by the middle of the week I hope to be riding it home.  :jalapeno:

If you're up for an '08 I came across about a half dozen a few months ago when I bought mine.  I think there are alot of people out there without the foresight to realize that if they get their hours cut or flat out lose their job they won't be able to keep an expensive bike like this.

When speaking with a dealer recently about the 09's and what was different about them than the 08's, one thing he mentioned was the $2k price jump.  But then told me that if I was interested in an '09 instead of the '08 I told him I was looking at he would knock off that $2k price hike.  Another negotiating tool you might consider using.

Well, I will tell you that I have an 09 Springer and it is a dramatic difference in the 07 and 08.
I think that the 09 is much better looking than the previous years. So I would really look at them closely and decide which one you want. the 240 on the 09 did it for me.

Next to buy the bike, you need to call the dealer (don't spend the time to drive to the dealers) and tell them you are ready to buy it right now. "give me the right price and I will write you a check"
(make sure of course you can do that or have the financing taken care of). Make sure that you discuss the deal complete with everything you want (ie. extended warranty, chrome, ect....)

Get a price from the first dealer.
And then call the other dealer and talk with him, tell him well this is the price I got and can you bet it "I'm itching to buy a bike today"
Then call the first dealer back
And continue until you get the price you want or they tell you to pound salt.

I did that with 4 dealer in North and South Carolina and I got my 09 for 1400 under invoice additions at MSRP, No larbor for installation and 500 off the extended warranty.
But they knew that I was willing to walk away from the deal at any time. Let us know how things go.

Is it possible to know what the invoice is on any Harley?  I've never known how to find out.

Holy SHHH#### :o.  You got the dealer to go below invoice.  Congratulations.  I negotiated a decent deal but not like that, you are good.  I don't think we are intending to damage the value of the bikes or hurt the dealers in any way but still you need to get the best price whenever you buy a motorcycle or any vehicle for that matter, it's a major investment.  My wife (the accountant) just told me we have to wait a couple more months before I can buy my bike, so I have time.  Unfortunately, there probably won't be any new CVO Springers left.
