Dyno Performance with D&D Pipes on 09 SERG
« on: July 31, 2009, 06:33:30 PM »

I have D&D pipes on my 09 SERG with no SERT or other ECM mod.  I am experiencing popping on deceleration and reading through various threads, knew it was probably either an exhaust leak or lean fuel mixture.

Confirmed that it was not an exhaust leak so wanted to check the fuel mixture and put in on a dyno.  I was told these bikes are set up by the factory to run lean (at least in California) and sure enough, therein is the cause of the popping.  SERT will improve this situation so am still deciding if I want to spend the $$ on this.  Will probably go with the SERT as I should also get a few more horses out of the bike.

FYI, the bike pulled 86 HP and 99 torque.

You want to ... maybe a SERT or a Power Commander or other tuning device...but you want to do something.  Your bike will appreciate it very much!  It will thank you by running cooler and by providing you more power.   :2vrolijk_21:

You can get a Power commander 5 from Fuel Moto with a preloaded map for a reasonable price.  I have one on mine and am very happy with it.

A tuning device will allow you to adjust the decel fuel mix to cure the popping. I had a SEST and recently changed to TTS Master Tune. The included V-Tune software will allow you to collect data while riding and then automatically make changes to your calibration which will get you to a 90% tune without a dyno.  This is a huge benefit over running a canned map.  A dyno tune by a SKILLED technician can get you a bit more power, but skilled tuners are few and far between.

If you installed the 2 into 1 Boss system, this is the disagreement I had with the D and D tech. He stated No need for a tuner, install the Boss system with a high flow AC, he also stated he did not see how adding a SEPT would show any measureable increases in performance. I asked him why would anyone desire to keep the HD Factory tuning. My Dyno Run posted under 09 SERG Dyno's shows the Base run doing exactly what D and D instructed me to do, Run 2 is with the addition of SE Pro Tuner 32109-08A and 6 hours of Dyno time. Base HP 84.52 / TQ 99.29 / with Air Fuel in the 16 range; after SEPRT install HP 97.60 / TQ 113.76 with Air Fuel in the 13.75 range.

Is 6 hours of Dyno time the norm?  Seems like a lot which = mucho $$'s.

4 hours is common, but I have seen a full day depending on the tuner and the build.  A skilled tuner can save lots of time by starting the process using maps he has already developed for similar builds.
