Moving parts within the camshaft?  It may prove to be imminently reliable.  But the pictures I'm seeing there make my legs involuntarily cross to protect my special place.  That's a heluva complicated, expensive and more difficult to service way of adding compression releases.  Someone working to create a market...

 :2vrolijk_21:    ;D

I was thinking about that just the other day.  Now that the early returns indicate the new hydraulic tensioner systems are holding up well (versus the crap they pawned off on us the first 8 years), I wonder just how bad the gear drive sales have been hit?  I know I changed my mind about gear drives, despite the heavy sales pitch from a local dealership performance guru and dyno tuner.  For all out performance engines, I still believe in the improved timing accuracy of the gears, but for regular street riding I think it's overkill.  And with the current lack of accuracy and dependability in H-D cranks, I think that new style chain drive has some definite advantages.

Oh, and I agree that the camshaft idea versus plain ol' compression releases is not something for which I would want to be the test dummy.  It may work just fine, but I have visions of things coming apart and destroying the whole engine.  Worst thing that can happen with the old mechanical releases is you either forget to push the buttons, or they develop a leak.

Had wondered about that also Jerry.  I'm satisfied with the gear drive sets in both mine for the dual advantages of losing the tensioners and added accuracy.  But I know both my cranks are ok.  Even knowing that if I'd done latter job six months later and had the newer tensioner package as an alternative the choice would have merited some real consideration.

And those weird cams....  Just looking at them scares the crap out of me.

First thing that came to mind to me was some other manufacturers attempt at "ACR's". :nervous:

Still amazez me sometimes how stupid and lemming-like riders are presumed to be sometimes.  Throw a product out there, put some splash in the description and watch them buy it.  That so often seems to be the thinking.  Fortunately we're (usually) smarter than that and the arrogant schmucks who try to pass their shlock off on us have to eat it.

Holding up well?
At 19899 miles on my 09, mine are being replaced.
As tight and cheap as they become in this down economy, Harley has agreed to a warranty replacement of mine after 20K miles with stock cams.
I will take a picture Monday and show the wear on mine!

Edited to add this picture.
It's not a picture of the tensioners but one of them does show.
This is the wear after 19899 miles. Harley said they were worn enough to replace under warranty.
Didn't look that bad to me but when it's free, why complain!

Brian

In comparison to all the troubles you have had, I can and do call my 110 a smooth running machine.

Besides 19899 miles in the past 11 months on the 09 is more than most 110's have been ridden. How many miles you ridden in the past 11 months?

Yes it's had a few interruptions in service, but down time has been minimal. Two weeks in 11 months is not what I call a lot of problems.

See ya in the Valley!

Just seemed like your bike has had a few valve train problems. Just heard through the grape vine that your heads were just removed.....remember the grapevine....

Let's see I put 8000 miles on the blue bike and 10,000 on the red bike since Daytona.

Blue bike the first year had 22,000 miles in 8 months. Wanted a little more torque for towing the trailer so I had the HD dealer install the HTCC package with flat top pistons. They installed Jims hydrosolid lifters and adjusted the push rods according to HD specs instead of half that....f*cked the motor and the only way to correct the problem was to bore the cases out. Wish the 113 kit was out then, would have gone that route. The 124 ran great for 24,000 miles till my Oven cleaner charade. Dealer gave me a price on r & r. What they didn't do was send out the crank and have it redone, welded, plugged, and balanced....but they charged me for it......fkn dealers......So now back to square one and do it correct again.

See you in the Valley :huepfenjump3:

To chime in on the hydraulic tensioners, I went with the Andrews set-up when mine (with Harley junk CTs) puked at 38k.  I've put over 6k on since the conversion and have not been sorry with my decision.

Cheers,
