I am burning about a 3/4 to 1 quart of oil in 1000 miles with my 09. I just started running it about a 1/2 quart low to see if it still burns oil. The bike runs great and with my oil cooler it runs from 214 to 238 degrees on my dipstick gauge. my oil is mobil 1 v-twin but I am looking to maybe switch to something else to see if I can get the clatter to mellow out a little bit.

I'm running Mobil 1, same as you on the oil temp, i had forgot about running mine about a 1/4 qt low when changed oil last time, its used about 1/4 qt at 2500 miles. just fattened up the fuel so should cool it off some, just haven't had time or chance to ride it with all the rain we have had around here.

I just used 1 qt of Red Line during 4,000 hard, hot miles in my 09 SERG with 11.6k miles.

Both of mine have about the same usage over miles.  The SEEG always starts a half quart low.  That's all I fill it too as filling it any more will only see it quickly fall back to about there anyway.  Then at between 3500 and 4000 it'll finally show a full quart low.  It'll get a half quart at that point to get it to oil change at 5000.

The older SERG is happy with an initial fluid level a little higher.  Probably only a pint off the full mark is its happy place.  At about 4000 it'll finally be down to a quart low also.  At that point I just pour one of the opened half quarts that always seem to be here in it.  Good til change at 5k.

never had any noticeable oil consumption between oil-changes on 4 twincams - except on my last FLHRCI 103 short before the engine crashed 2nd time - about 1 litre on 1.000 km then.

And I've never heard of a sound twincam using up oil like that.

just got back from 3000 mile trip to the smokies.  my 2009 cvo springer went through 1/2 quart of oil every 1200 miles.  weather in the low 80's and bike started with fresh oil and 3500 miles on it.  dealer in bowling green ky said it shouldnt be using any oil.  got back home and took to kutters in janesville wi ,  told it was not right and to bring in when done riding for the season so they could explore problem..  also told that by the two dealerships that they have seen and heard of others with this problem    also excessive heat issues on the 09.   Check your oil tank, mine had a very rusted crossover tube inside.  had to be flushed at 900 miles.   several issues with bike already, beginning to wonder if   :worthless:

Rings or valve seals come to mind (Viton valve seals) ?   Have you done a compression test or leak down test to see where you are at?

Oil useage on these motors IME is dwon the guides usually. The cause is guide to valve stem clearance and or poor valve stem seals.

With numbers that low the motor would barely fire
Assuming the test was done right (ACR disconnected, Wide open throttle plate) there are issues.

Used about 1/2 quart on a trip recently, running a bit of interstate, 1700 miles total trip.  A little surprising but I do have to wipe out the air filter every 1000 miles or so due to carryover.  Normal day trips at lower speeds have not shown any oil usage between changes.
