UFO_HOG and Skinny Jims North West Adventure
« on: August 01, 2009, 10:03:48 PM »

Day 1 started early. We had agreed to a 6:00 am start time; I guess we were a little anxious to get on the road, because when I pulled up to Jim’s house at 5:45am he was waiting with helmet in hand. 5:52 am we hit the road. Traveled up Hwy 41, through Yosemite, and up and over Tioga Pass. We stopped for breakfast at Nicelys, a well known Lee Vining café on the 395 corridor.
After breakfast we headed north to Hwy 167, which took us due east across to the Nevada border and turned north on Hwy95 to Hawthorne, Fallon, and then on to I80 east, where we ended our ride in Mill City, NV. Now, when you look on a map and see Mill City, the average guy would think of a small Nevada town …..WRONG!…. It’s a Truck Stop. Fortunately, they had a hotel, and the rooms were clean and cheap. ($39.00)  Would I recommend it to anyone else, Hell No! But, it worked.
Tomorrow, it’s off towards Boise, Id and on to Idaho City, for night 2.

Day 2 started in Mill City, NV, (aka Truck Stop Hotel). Most of today’s ride was all high desert and straight roads. We made a stop at High Desert Harley-Davidson. What a nice dealership. One of the best looking waiting areas you will ever see.
Leaving Boise we headed up Hwy 21 to Idaho City, A nice twisty ride through the lava beds. During the gold rush, Idaho City was one of the largest cities in the Idaho, Montana territory.

Day 3…  Idaho City was an interesting town, but it’s off to Macks Inn. The ride from Idaho City to Macks Inn was a fun ride over Stanley Pass, down into the valley across Craters of the Moon to Macks Inn, a resort just 22 miles south of West Yellowstone.

Pics to follow........

Day 4 was a long awaited ride through Yellowstone and over my favorite ride, Beartooth Pass. Pass was more awesome than the last time I rode over, which was close to dusk. The ride from Red Lodge to Bozeman was a fast ride across I90. We arrived at the home of Andy and Bonnie "Friends of my buddy". They treated us very well, and the company was even better.

Day 5 started a little late, after breakfast with our wonderful hosts, Andy and Bonnie. We left Bozeman, Montana and headed for Lolo, Montana (approx: 320 miles). We traveled across beautiful rolling hills and gradually climbed to Lolo. Our destination for the day was the Lumberjack Saloon and our 4 awaiting cabins. Directions for the Lumberjack did in fact include “Turn off the paved road”. But, there was nothing redneck about this place.  Built by Kella’s (Our Host) father in 1974, it started out as a bar in the woods for the many ranchers in the area. Sold a few years ago, the then current owners let the place run down and were near closure when it was purchased back by Kella 6 months ago. It really shows what hard work can do, this place was beautiful. The building is built entirely of pine logs where it took only 4 logs stacked to get the 9 ft wall. “Yes they were big” The bar, which is approximately 30 ft, was made from 1 log and was carved out to make room for the sinks and storage underneath. Kella was a great host, serving us drinks and grilling steak sandwiches for all of us. Oh, and by the way. We showed up on a Monday, the day they are normally closed. This was opened up just for us 4, but in no time word got out and the party grew. I can’t wait to get back to this place and see my new found friends.

Day 6 was our ride to Glacier National Park in northern Montana and the “Going to the Sun Highway”. The views were breathtaking and the road to the top was great riding. We only went to the first visitor center due to low clouds, making visibility difficult. So we headed back down the hill to our hotel in Kalispell, Montana.

Day 7… Kalispell, Montana - We parted ways with our riding partners today and headed south towards home. We made a stop at the Coeur D’ Alene Harley Dealership then headed due south on Hwy 95. Weather was great for riding, partly cloudy and cool. It was a 400+ mile day to get to our stop in Grangeville, Idaho. A town of 3300. We dined at Ernie’s Steakhouse where the guy was cooking on an open grill and chopping the wood for the fire right before your eyes. Destination tomorrow, Lakeview, Oregon.
