3rd set of tensioners
« on: August 02, 2009, 12:36:32 PM »

I average 35,000 miles out of tensioners......75,000 on the bike and in for another set of tensioners. I was gonna put the 08 conversion in. but with the miles on the motor. I figured by the time I need another set. the motor will be going to have a re-manufactured srevice.

That's kinda normal for the tensioners. I went gear drive and disposed of them properly.

Are you happier with the gear drive? Are they a lot "noisier" than the chain drive?

I like the gear drive. I would not say it's noisier, it's just a different noise. My bike with the gear drive, S&S lifters is quieter now than before enabling me to hear the gear drive. I have been building motors for a number of years and my ears are tuned to listen for sounds in motors,if your not accustomed to hearing these things you may not even notice the change in sound from changing to a gear drive, but if you change to the S&S lifters and they are adjusted correctly you will notice the difference in the noise they don't make over stock. Did that make sense?

Yes. I am having "clattering" issues that my dealer cannot seem to hear and a friend said it sounds like a cam tensioner. I have often thought of going to a gear drive, but worried a little about the noise factor. Thank you for clearing that up. I read Chips post about the S&S lifters and was wondering if both (as you have done) would be my best choice. I'm no mechanic but I am noise sensitive and none of my other Harleys (including my 07 SEUC with the 110) have ever sounded like this. It didn't start out this way and adding a Super race tuner recently hasn't changed anything as far as the noise is concerned.

It's not a hard job and there are only a couple special tools you really need. The tensioner spring tool and the inner cam bearing puller and installer, and the oil pump/lifter block alignment bolts, and a ovenand a frezzer, and handtools.

Update on my clattering noise. HD tech called Moco and they instructed him on what to check. The cam tensioner of course. They were 20 thousands out which he corrected. Put it back together and the same exact noise. He called Moco again and this time they checked some other things, one of which were the lifters. He replaced all of the lifters and it solved the problem. The absolute quietest this thing has been since day one.

A friend of mine offered this up: they cam tensioners/adjusters are oil pressured. One of the lifters could have been leaking oil causing a lack of pressure on the tensioner which allowed the chain to become lose and make the noise. It did seem noisier on the cam side.

Which lifters did you end up using?

So you have the hydraulic tensioners. I would stick with them. Glad it's fixed, even Happier that finally HD was able to fix something, but you do have a pretty good dealer from my experience with my clutch change out.

Gulf Coast took care of it. My local dealer told me they couldn't hear anything out of the ordinary.

Ah,you were down in my neighborhood. You got lucky with Gulf Coast HD. That's where we bought our bikes from, but stopped letting them work on them a couple of years. I do most all the work now, except whenwe are on the road.

There was this tech named Don that seemed to care about doing it the right way and knew what he was doing. I will request him in the future.
