Clocked at 188
« on: August 06, 2009, 08:03:23 AM »

The Iowa State Patrol clocked a Council Bluffs motorcyclist going 188mph on Interstate 29 Wednesday night.

Only Channel 6 News was there as the high speed chase ended in Omaha after 33 miles. Iowa investigators say the driver parked his Suzuki motorcycle in a friend's garage.

36-year-old James Foldenauer of Council Bluffs has been arrested and charged with multiple offenses including eluding arrest, multiple passing violations, reckless driving and several counts of speeding. Investigators aren't sure why he didn't stop for troopers.

It started on I-29 near Missouri Valley when a State Patrol plane recorded the 188mph speed in a 70mph zone. His top speed in a 55mph construction zone was 171mph. Supervisors say they've never recorded a speed that high on local roads.

The plane watched as the motorcycle drove south on I-29, took the 35th Street exit in Council Bluffs and sped through town before catching up to Broadway and entering Omaha on I-480. Along the way, speeds continued over 100mph according to troopers.

Once in Omaha, the motorcycle traveled south on I-480 to I-80 westbound before getting off on the 60th Street exit. The plane watched and recorded every move and then contacted Omaha police with a final destination.

When officers arrived on the ground near 59th and Fay Blvd, the garage door was closed and the driver had gone into the house.

Inside the garage was a 2003 red Suzuki, 1300cc, parked. Investigators say the driver doesn't even live in the house. It's his acquaintance's place.

Nebraska didn't have any charges on him. Officers helped since the chase ended in their jurisdiction.

Foldenauer agreed to come to Council Bluffs himself and take care of the charges. Otherwise it would be a night in jail in Omaha. So the cuffs came off and he got into his friend's pickup to drive to Iowa and answer the charges -- as the State Patrol followed him.

The fine alone for 188mph is $1410 and a license suspension.

Law enforcement cruisers aren't able to go that fast so often times investigators will follow with a plane or helicopter and wait for the motorcycle to run out of gas.

If you think it's the journey not the destination you don't live in Nebraska.
