That's just frightening.  Have been caught out in hail storms a few times.  But always little stuff.  Might hurt but no real damage when it hits you.  Something like this would just ruin your whole day (or more) though.  Can only offer best wishes to the souls in it and around it.

Sturgis Hail Storm

I thought I go in some crap leaving the CVO GTG in Rapid City going back to Spearfish, lot of sheet lightening and heavy rain, with no visibility. Nothing like that hail and wind storm. Hope not to many got hurt.

We left Thursday morning went to Cody, WY, on Friday in Choteau. MT saw  the report on the Weather Channel. Back in Calgary saturday.

hail is very common in the Hills. In fact, Hill City is nicknamed "Hail City"... living here we see hail dozens of times each year, but usually pee size up to about a quarter... When the bigger golf ball and softball size (up to 4 1/2 inch) come down nothing is safe. Last year I had $26,000 in damages to my property. The insurance companies are so accustomed to hail damage, they send out an adjuster and mail you a check within a couple of days. Just a part of living in such a magnificent place. I hope no one was injured

Holy Smokes!!  I should consider myself lucky.  Got caught in a brief but painful WY hailstorm on Saturday -- there was NO place to seek shelter.  I was watching dime sized hailstones land on my tank & just kept going about 35mph.  I didn't know what to do.  Couldn't pull off, concerned I might get rear ended if I went too slow, but I could see where it was over maybe 1/2 mile ahead of me so I just kept rolling.  Ended up with welts on my arm.

Our group was caught in a hail storm between Keystone and Rapid City three of four years back.  Quarter sized to silver dollar sized hail... We pulled off the road and stopped...got pelted long enough to say screw this...jumped back on and continued, assuming we could find some type of shelter.  Every overpass was packed with bikes.  Stopping seemed more dangerous than continuing.  We did not get out of the hail for about 40 minutes of riding.  One thing for certain....hail hurts!  No bike damage, but plently of bumps and bruises.

Two years ago, we again got caught in hail a few miles from the Pactola Lake reservior.  We pushed on until we reached the Pactola visitor center, where we found shelter.  Reconfirmed...hail hurts..

I was in it. Luckily I was at the camp ground when it hit. Harley Davidson F150 ruined, 04 Pumpkin gas tank and front fender ruined and open trailer with heavy damage. I can post pictures tonight from home. I have never seen baseball size hail in my life. Our whole camp ground was destroyed. Every trailer, every motorhome and every car or truck was damaged. My friends bike was dented after a large hail went THROUGH the enclosed trailer and then hit his bike. I was one of the lucky ones. My truck was pointed the right way to receive the least amount of damage. We still had allour glass in tact for the drive back to Michigan. Both mirrors were gone of course.

Nice pictures. Hail in SD can come in two varieties. One is loosely compacted like a snow cone and splatters on impact. Then there is the "hard" version like seen in the picture. Notice it has a certain degree of "ice cube" consistency. Otherwise know as "hard as a rock."  Yep, that stone could kill you if it hit you in the head... I got hit by hail between a quarter and a golf ball last summer and the spots of impact are still sore on my noggin over a year later... That's why i wear a helmet even if it's 103 outside now....
