Idle's between nil and 1500
« on: August 09, 2009, 02:32:01 PM »

Hi everyone , I guess I'm one of the lurkers and until now have enjoyed being  that and learning lots from you all  ,but now my Ultra has a problem and hope you folk's out there can help. I've had my 2007 Ultra now from new and done 14000 miles and it's been reliable with just the normal leaking rear cylinder that was fixed at about 8000 miles  ,I'm happy with the bike being more or less stock and once run in I fitted the nightrider XEd's and rush slip ons with 1.75" baffle's for a better sound and to make it run a little cooler  and its been great until about 2000 miles ago when I started to get more popping on deceleration and very occasionally when coming to a stop the bike would just die instead of idle,it would restart ok but only by holding the throttle open would it not die again,I did the normal and checked  the pipe joints and found that the crossover pipe between the rear cylinder was loose so  tightened that and all the other joints  ,this seemed to help for a time and the stalling didn't come back but then after a while  instead of it occasionally cutting out on idle it would hold 12/1300revs whilst the bike was moving and not until I stopped would it go to 1000,this has been happening more and more and now happens everytime I go out at some point, I've also got more popping on deceleration .So I put the original pipes back on and took the XEd's off ,booked it in at my dealers and rode it the 100 mile to them and it didn't play up at all ,they said that 4 fault codes had come up some for running rich and some lean,i haven't told them about the XEd's or pipes, they said they couldn't fault the bike and suggested I tried it  and if it  happened again to get in touch with them as the fault was reported to them 4 days inside the warranty. The 100 mile journey back home and another 150 miles today and the bike is still running perfect which tells me something but i dont quite know what . So the question is, do I put the XEd's and pipes back on and if i do and it plays up again what do you suggest I do next  .I've been more than happy with the XEd's for 1000's of miles and don't want to go to a race tuner etc if I don't have to.
I'd be very greatfull for any suggestions even if it is FFS get a power commander  :)

Inspect the pipes you removed closely for any cracks.  The symptoms you describe very much indicate an exhaust leak - if not at a joint - then possibly caused by a crack...

I guess this tells you where to look.......there seems to be a problem with your XEd's or pipes, or both.
Try the pipes back on first, then, your other mods.....I think process of elimination will work it out.
I hope you find the problem.

do you see any error-report? Could be a problem on the intake side (uncontrolled airflow, crack in manifold ...) too, there would be an error shown in this case.

If you have your install sheet, there is a simple test to determine if the resistors on your XIED's are functioning properly, I would check them and try just installing your XIED's if it still runs properly, Then the Exhaust is probably the culprit. Steve at Nightrider is great to work with you might give him a call and he could shed some light on the Wires causing such symptoms, I used the IED's and XIED's for thousands of miles on my 07 and they performed well.

Problem solved  :orange:
First put the Rush pipes back on and this time used exhaust putty to seal them as they have been of and on loads of times in the past , they were getting a little loose even with new claps tightened down as much as possible, did about 70 miles without a problem except it was obviously lean, tonight put the XEd's on and have just done another 70 miles and its running great ,much cooler and very little popping and a perfect tickover so i am a happy man, thanks everyone for you suggestions
