How far from bike does your powerlock key fob work?
« on: August 10, 2009, 10:37:04 PM »

Dealer is ordering me 2 new key fobs for my 2010 SE UC. They tried re-programming the originals and changing out the batteries, but so far they can't get them to operate from a distance further than 1-2 ft from the right side of the bike and they won't funtion from any further back than the seat. Both fobs can only operate from the same ridiculously short distance.

Anyone else have this problem? If not, how far away does your key fob actually lock or unlock the power locks on the saddlebags and TP?

Haven't had the problem you described.  Mine works about 8 to 10 feet from the bike.

I'm betting it's not the FOBs, but rather the unit on the bike.  I'll bet if they replace that, you won't have any problems...

I think your bet might be correct. It's unlikely that 2 fobs would misbehave identically if the receiver unit on the bike was functioning properly. If one fob functioned properly (15ft) and the other only 1-2 ft, then it would make sense that the one fob was bad, but both not functioning properly...must be the receiver end. Thanks...guess I need to have the dealership order the receiver unit. Does anyone know if this is a stand alone part or built into some other componentry?

You have to be fairly close to mine before they will work. I've had mine worked on before at the dealer. Last time, they had to order a new module, which is in the TP lid. Not 100% reliable system, not like a car. When mine crapped out last time, I had to go back to the key for awhile. While not a big problem, I would still like the system to work as designed. Mostly a "trick" system to me. If you use it alot, it will begin to malfunction, for sure. Unless they have made some changes on the newer models.. Sometimes, mine would lock/unlock the tourpak but not the saddlebags, or vice-versa. Sometimes only the tourpak and 1 saddlebag would lock. Very weird system..

Hmmm, what are we talking about? The "keyfob" for the security system or the transmitter for the central locking system?

Mine works from some distance. However, since it only works when the ignition is on, I see no big point in the remote option anyway. The little switch in the dashboard right next to the ignition is what I use almost all the time. I'd rather have smaller key ;-), or it should work without having to first turn them ignition on.

Rude safely,
Louis

Hmmm Louis, you are talking about the lock-gimmick. Mine (the transmitter i.e.) works without ignition on, but it seems I must be close enough to have the keyfob deactivate the security-module. But have to confess I didn't do any closer research on this item yet  ::)

I like it anyway and it's a gimmick many others deeply envie  ;D

Allthough on second thought I would prefer an old helmet to be stolen over a broken top case ...

This is probably a bad thing, but mine are always in the TP and I very rarely take them out. I have placed a piece of Velcro on all three remote/keys that the bike came with.
At least I know were they are.

But to answer the question mine works up too about 10 feet.

I have to agree with the statement it probably isn't the FOB's.

Hmmm, what are we talking about? The "keyfob" for the security system or the transmitter for the central locking system?

My original question was for the remote control for the power locks? The key fob has no buttons on it and merely activates and deactivates the security system based on proximity to the bike. The bike key is separate and has 2 buttons built into it. One for locking and the other for unlocking the TP and saddlebags.

I did some proximity testing. The security fob will activate/deactivate the bike's security system from approximately 13-15ft away from the bike in any direction. The power locks however are a different story. The key will only function if it is within 1 ft of the fairing (in front of it) or within 1 ft of the dash but only on the right side of the tank. The buttons on the key will not function back by the TP or the left side of the bike.

From this basic testing I assume the security receiver and powerlock receiver are 2 separate units. I also believe based on my proximity testing that the the powerlock receiver must be somewhere in the fairing, most likely on the right side (as you are seated on the bike). Does anyone know for sure exactly where the powerlock receiver is located?

Each saddle bag has a box and the TP has a box, I would guess they are what control the locks.

I just tested my remote-lock. Depending on angle they work from between 5 and 10 feet away. Our mech states there is a reason for their signal to be comparatively week: this is to avoid unvolontary unlocking from a greater distance as there is no indication for lock/unlock other than the noise of the locks wich is audible only in about 10 feet distance.

Not an expert on these matters, but the boxes are for the little motors. I don't think there are three separate units
to control the locking/unlocking. This should be one unit, and most probably either under the seat or under the right side cover.

Ride safely,
Louis

PS: Mine only works with the ignition on ON.
