« on: August 11, 2009, 08:57:45 PM »

Want to sell of trade my Blue 04 FLHTCSE  for a 2010 Ultra CVO......18000 miles , 6 speed added...mint shape. Deaaler wants to only give 14,500 trade and MSRP on Ultra......seems like a ripoff!

Kelley Blue Book average trade-in value for yours is $15,850.  You should be able to convince a dealer to give you at least that much in trade.

The only "book" value I could find quickly is from Kelly Blue Book.  They indicate a trade-in value of $15850 and a retail of $20530 for the FLHTCSE, and consider average mileage for a 2004 Touring model to be 27,000 miles.  However, I don't know of many dealers who actually use KBB, most use one of the specialized NADA guides for motorcycles.  Ask your dealer to see whichever book he uses if you think he's jerking your chain.

The unfortunate facts are that this is a supply and demand situation that really isn't in your favor.  The CUSEx models are about the only bikes that still sell quickly, so there is no real incentive for a dealer to discount one.  And the used bike market is pretty soft, so the dealer may be stuck with the trade for quite a while.  That possibility will drive his offer down.

Have you tried listing your bike for sale locally?  You never know, there might be someone out there looking for exactly what you have and who would be willing to pay closer to the $20k retail figure.

I believe, at least what my dealer was using, was called the "Black Book".  (You can look it up online, it's a valid pricing guide.)  I'd recommend, if your dealer does it, is put the bike on consignment with them.  My dealer was only going to give me $14000 for my 08 Street Glide as trade in on the '10 SESG because, they said , with the change in 09 to the new rear end, the 08's and earlier bike's trade in value has dropped.  The suggested I put it on consignment.  I did, and three days later, sold it for 17,499, after the dealer took their 10%, I still cleared $15740 or about 1740 more than they were going to give me on trade, plus they did all the sales paperwork for me.  It was a no hassle deal for me.  If retail is $20K, put it on consignment for that and even if they get 10%, you'll still clear 18K and not have to put up with people coming to your house to look at the bike or any other hassles associated with selling it yourself.   Just a thought...... :nixweiss:

bbrown, I'm  starting to think along your lines.......Seems like the 2k I spent on a 6 speed added nothing to the value...If I can
t get at least 20k on trade, I'll keep it ! If my dealer wants full price, so do I!

It didn't.  Nor does just about any other accessory or upgrade.  Just doesn't work that way.  Those are things to pacify our own desires or tweak to our own tastes.  They do almost zero for the bike's value at trade time.

You won't get retail value when trading in on a CVO bike.  If you have to have that kind of money, your only hope is to sell your bike yourself.

The dealer doesn't have to do it because the demand is high for these bikes.  Realistically, you should shoot for obtaining average trade-in value or a little more.

As was stated above, used touring bikes have to compete with the newer frame design and features of the 09s and 10s for sales when they are on the dealer's floor.  The dealer is going to make money on both ends of the sale, the new bike and the used bike he takes in trade.

According to NADA the average retail is about 19K, Nada does not list trade in values but I would expect 16K
