Billy Lane sentenced to 6 years

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Motorcycle builder Billy Lane was sentenced to six years in prison Friday after pleading no contest to vehicular homicide.

On September 4th 2006, the Florida Highway Patrol says Lane was trying to pass three vehicles on a double-yellow-line stretch of A1A when his southbound Dodge Ram pickup hit a Yamaha motorcycle driver who was traveling northbound.That motorcycle driver, 56 year old Gerald Morelock, was killed instantly.

At the sentencing Friday morning, the victim's family told the judge they would like to see something positive come out of their tragic loss. The victim's brother and nephew both said they would like to work with Lane to set up a non profit foundation to help raise money to help children as a way to continue to honor Gerald Morelock who enjoyed helping kids.

Don't hold your breath.  If similar cases are any indication, he will be unlikely to serve even half of that time.

I wonder how they came up with 6 years as the value of a human life?  Oh yeah, it's one of those "there but for the grace of God go I" deals.  Judges, prosecutors, legislators, etc. who also like to imbibe, and who have most likely driven drunk themselves, seem to go awfully easy on this particular type of crime.  Not too hard to understand why folks take these things to the civil courts to get justice, since the criminal system is loathe to treat it seriously.  Hopefully the family will take it to civil court and clean him out completely.

No doubt he will get a 50% reduction for being a model prisoner, credits for time he was inconvenienced during this ordeal, and he might even earn extra time off by teaching his cellmates how to groom, so I have no illusion whatsoever that he'll have this all behind him in 1-1/2 to 2 years at the max. Count on it.

It is not enough but when you compare it to Donte Stallworth he got nailed. Both are just wrong.

Maybe something similar to Orange County Choppers, but set in the prison workshop? ;)  Sounds good to me, as long as all the proceeds go to the victim's family and not a penny to Lane.

Lane is a repeat drunk driver.  His license is revoked for life and it should be.  ironic for a bike builder to not have a D/L.
