Free flowing air cleaner 103
« on: August 16, 2009, 12:48:44 PM »

I have a 2005 Screaming Eagle Electra Glide. I put a free flowing air cleaner kit I had laying around that was made for the twincam. Now I am getting oil spray on the bag and a small amount dripping from the cleaner. Everything is good on the installation. I checked with Arleen Ness for the Big Sucker, They do not offer one for the 103. Does anybody know why? Why could I just not buy one from them for the twin cam and put it on it? I am going to try to bring the oil level down a little however if it holds 4 qts. to me that is what should be in it. Somebody please help? Thanks

Most kits designed for the TC engine will work on the 103, including the Big Sucker. These engines do not typically hold the full four quarts. Try runing it at about 1/4" above the add mark on the dipstick.

Several of us here use the Big Sucker on our 103's with great success.    As suggested, back off the oil level with your current configuration and see if that solves your issue.

BTW, can get the best price on the AN Big Sucker at Eastern Perf.

Why on the Arleen Ness website do they say they do not make a big sucker for the 103?

Good question.  There is no valid reason, so I guess they hired an idiot to write their product descriptions.  I hate to think of just how many folks with SE103's are now going to have to take their Big Sucker's off after several years of use because they no longer "officially" fit their bikes.

http://www.arlenness.com/c-82-big-sucker-air-filter-kit-02-09-carbfi-models-exc-08-09-flt.aspx

Try contacting them directly and see if they can explain why these won't fit a 103, and how they managed to sell hundreds or even thousands of them to 103 owners in the past.  Must be a lot of those things hanging on garage walls or lying on benches somewhere. :nixweiss:

Just went out their site....they don't specifically give fitments for engine sizes...just by model:
"Fits 99-07 Carb equipped Twin Cams and 02-09 FI Twin Cams (except 08-09 FLT)"

Eastern Perf. still has one of the best prices...$125 for the chrome unit which includes UPS ground shipping to the lower 48...$103.95 for natural look backing plate.  Good place to do business with and they ship quick.

http://www.easternperformance.com/products.php?product=Arlen-Ness-Big-Sucker-Air-Filter-Kit-Stage-I

The one highlighted below is what I have on my 103" and it resides nicely under the stock football cover.  Installation was easy and performance results are excellent.  No oil misting issues due to the way the Ness system is designed.

Sales propaganda:
Features a one-piece aluminum backing plate/carb support bracket
Eliminates the need for banjo fittings, hoses and filter
Breather passages exit at the mouth of the carburetor, creating a virtually closed-loop system
Stage I kit includes a high-flow filter and accepts 93-05 oval or round OEM outer cover
All necessary hardware and instructions are included with each kit

Stage I
AN18-500 For 1993-2005 all Big Twin Models with CV Carb and 2000-2005 fuel injected Softails,2000-2004 Dyna, 2002-2004 Touring fuel injected models (will not fit 1995-2001 Touring Models) (natural)
AN18-503 For 1999-2001 Touring Models with Fuel Injection (chrome)
AN18-505 For 99-06 Twin Cam carb and 01-09 Twin Cam Delphi fuel-injected models(natural)
AN18-507 For 99-06 Twin Cam carb and 01-09 Twin Cam Delphi fuel-injected models (chrome
AN18-510 For 2008-UP Touring Models only- Natural Aluminum Backing Plate
AN18-512 For 2008-UP Touring Models only- Chrome Backing Plate

Hope this helps....ez

You know eastern performance even has bold writing will not fit the 103. I think we are being discriminated against or something

the only reason is the flt does not have a throttle body support bracket. you can get one from HD cheap. it will act like a spacer. you can paint it granite or have it chromed.

I've had a Ness Big Sucker Stage 1 on two different 103's.  No problems here.  Didn't need to buy and support bracket from HD either.

I have the model 18-507 (chrome) on my '03 SERK.

I just check Eastern Performance's web site and I don't see where they state the Big Sucker won't fit the 103's.

Go figure, well I am ordering it and selling my Harley free flowing (air and oil) air cleaner on ebay. I hope this Big Sucker will stop some of the spray.

It's not the air cleaner that's causing your problem, provided it's installed properly.  In all likelyhood you have overfilled the motor with oil.  Like somone said earlier, take it down to about 1/4" above the add mark and see it the problem goes away.  Some Harleys to have more of this problem than others, don't know why.  but I don't think a different air kit is going to solve your problem.
