Flush mount gas cap and gauge question
« on: August 16, 2009, 08:48:58 PM »

What should be lit up with 3/4 of a tank of fuel. Mine has 5 led lights and the gas pump symbol. Seems like the gas pump symbol shouldn't be on until I need gas.

My SERK3 just went thru the same thing. It was the sending unit on my bike. Check that. ;)

Do you mean the gas pump symbol on the gauge itself, or the one on the dash?  The one on the gauge stays on all the time (check the owner's manual).  It's the one on the dash that comes on when you are low.  As far as lights, that's about what mine does, five lit for 3/4 tank.

That is correct the fuel pump on the gauge is on all the time.  I guess that is to remind us that, its a fuel gauge and not just party lights on the tank.   :nixweiss:

He described what happened to mine. The orange gas tank light in the speedo, meaning low fuel, was on when full and went out after 20-30 miles. The lights only went down 1 or 2 lights. The correct replacement sending unit fixed it. But that doesn't mean that's what he's asking I guess. ;)

Mine actually isn't too bad for accuracy.  The first light doesn't go out for quite a while, but I tend to over-stuff the tank, especially on long trips (had gas weeping out after a right turn a couple times).  At two lights it has a gallon left.  About a hundred and eighty miles is usually as long as I care to sit astride it at a stretch, so don't need to pay too much attention to it.

i wouldn't recommend stuffing the tank, yes there is an overflow but you are playing Russian Roulette by do this. also, don't fill it up only to ride 2 miles home and park it in the Garage, hazard.

That is normal. What is NOT normal is for that flush mounted fill cap to EXPLODE after you remove it. I have had problems with that cap, must have a lemon. I have had to replace it twice (glad its under warranty). I keep a spare in my bags now.

I had the flush mounts on my last bike and if I filled it too far, after a short ride I would see streaks on the gas tank where some gas was leaking out.  I stopped filling it too high and the problem went away.  The fuel light on the gauge itself stayed on to remind you that this is your gas gauge, like you'd forget or something.

I had the flush mounts on my previous bike and when I sold it a year later a couple of the LEDs had gone  south. I think it's a bit of a problem.
