Front wheel v/s rear wheel
« on: August 17, 2009, 10:34:15 AM »

What is the difference in the front and rear wheel on my 08 SE ULTRA?  I would like to use the removed rear wheel on the front of my SE Trike since it has plenty of tread left and wouldn't effect handling like a two wheeler.

Thanks for any info,

Jim

Aren't they different sizes?  At least for 2009 the front is a 130 17 and the rear a 180 16.

The sizes are the same. 16" and the inscription on the chrome wheels is identical.  I am going to pull the front wheel and install the rear wheel with some using some old rotors to see the fit and and I will post my findings.

some guys use rear tires on the front of trikes and sidecars bikes due to thicker tread - in the late 70's and early 80's lots of guys i knew ran a rear on the front with the rotation arrow the wrong way - it sure was common in iowa.

of course that right when goodyear stopped making harley tires and dunlop started - and the front tires had very thin tread. i sure liked the raised whitewall good years..

the wheels however wont fit - the sprocket uses different bolt holes and while front wheels are centered on the hub, rear wheels are not centered

you probably could make a adapter to make it work - depends on what you are after.

After pulling my front wheel and comparing with the rear already off the bike, the only difference is that the rear wheel uses larger bolts to hold on the rotor and sprocket.  All other demensions are the same.  Atl least with the experiement, I now know that a wider rear tire tread will fit under the front fender on my converted trike.

The rear wheel will not work on the front as far as I know....  been there done that.   What you will find is that the LH side of the center hub, of the rear wheel is shorter than the right hand side.   This is due to the pully being slightly thicker than the disc rotor.   It will fit (not work) because there is only, maybe an 1/8th inch difference, but it will tear the break pads up due to the LH rotor sitting to far inboard on the hub.   If you make spacers, then space out the caliper properly you can make it work (done it), but its a huge PITA, and I was never fully convinced it was safe.   I never could get the bike to quit wearing brake pads weird.   I was going to put back the original wheel, but my buddy that was trying to make it work ended up buying the bike....   He's still fighting with it.   I think he's just stubborn.
