Brakes/ABS
« on: August 19, 2009, 11:54:49 AM »

I own a '08 FLHRSE4/Annv. and I've read all the discussion in the topic I'm now posting in (even did a search for ABS), but I still have yet to see anything that answers a question that has been weighing on the brain.  Does anyone know or have first-hand experience in changing out the rims on the SERK.  If so, do you lose the ABS if you go to, lets say a 21" front or even change to a different rim the same size as stock but without the carriageless rotors?  I know the ABS runs a line to some sort of donut shape magnet or something that interacts with the wheel/hub.  If you change to different rims or brake systems (rotors, etc), can you still install back into palce the ABS system or do you just have to abandon it?  Am I totally off, and the ABS is actually tied into the brake calipers and that whole block and it doesn't really have anything to do with the rotors and rim?  I'm asking for front and back wheels.

Thanks for any wisdom or experience you can part with.  Don't get me wrong, I like my rims and ABS, but I'm not really keen on the whole carriageless rotors and tire cupping/warped rotor conundrum thing.  However, I do like the idea of having floating brakes like on the new '10 CVO's.  I only have close to 5K on the bike and thank GOD I haven't seen any cupping or rotor problems yet ... :nervous:

The magnetic sensors that control your ABS are integrated into the wheel spacers (donut shaped magnet). If your replacement wheel is compatible with the stock spacers, the ABS should retain its functionality. However, the different size contact patch of a 21" wheel/tire combo will likely be different from stock which is what the ABS is calibrated for.  This could have an adverse impact on correct functioning.
