It has been my experience with rather heated discussions with the MOCO. Harley does not warrent corrosion. I had a bike totaled by State Farm due to corrosion. Harley didn't want to have anything to do with it. Bike was a year old with 1700 miles. Long story  :soapbox:

Story would be interesting, even if it's a long one!

Shattered my ankle, wasted on pain meds but I'll do my best.

Had a 2005 electra glide classic. Noticed a bit of corrosion on the fork legs. Harley dealer and corp said that under no circumstances do they warrent for corrosion.During the next two weeks every piece of chrome, stainless, aluminum was being affected. I took the bike back to the dealer and the repair would have been $11,000.00.  As I said this was a garage kept virtually new bike. My dealer was great and got State Farm involved with the bike. I will be a SF customer for life they covered it under comprehensive and gave me the full purchase price of the bike.  After some investigating turns out that there were opened containers of pool chemicals in the garage (no where near the bike though) that were the cause of the severe corrosion. This was discovered weeks later. The thing that got me was that HD was so matter of fact that corosion in no way for any reason was covered under waranty. If I remember correctly it is spelled out in the paperwork.

I got warranty on mirrors, the right brake lever and the lid to the top trunk. Bubbling or pealing of the chrome and lacquer.  I think that was the within a year of my purchase.

Whose going to the Hawaii HOG rally?  I know 2009_FLTRSEI3 is as one of the officials running the event.

The main reason I won't take my bike out in the winter even if the weather is nice is due to the amount of salt on the roads.  Here in the Great Frozen Northeast, there is salt residue on the roads from the first snowfall until at least mid-April.  I'll only take the bike out after a few rainstorms have washed the roads clean.  The major issue is that when the snow melts, the salt that was dissolved in it becomes a fine white dust on the roads.  If you ride on such a road, this salt "dust" gets on everything (engine, wheels) and will start eating through whatever it's on unless you wash the stuff off right away.

Oh, and I had an open bag of Weed & Feed in the garage last winter and I noticed that the exposed zinc bolts on the bike got all whitish.  I ditched the Weed & Feed right away.......

I have some pitting on one of the heatshield on my 2010 SG and brought it to the attention to my dealer at the 500 mi oil change. The service manager at the dealer told me the MOCO policy is "one piece of chrome one time per bike" If true I should save that warranty service in case a more expensive pieces of the bikes chrome end up flawed. I don't know if this is correct or not. I would appreciate it if someone that knows different about this item posts on this
thank

Everyone knows the problems we had with the '04 SEEGs as far as chrome goes.I had at least 10 pieces of chrome replaced under warranty.Didn't make any difference if it was peeling or pitted & corroded.Have to keep an aye on the SESG.

the MoCo used to be really generous with warranty matters - but no more. Over here this year they are stupidly denying even the most evident warranty cases. They loose in court as the EC-consumer-laws are very strict: anything failing within the first two years is to be replaced.

It seems to be a new policy and our dealers are very unhapy about it.

I ride it 7 days a week... I'm off Mondays and Tuesdays, so first thing Monday AM I'm out scrubbing the weeks worth of road grime off. (It rains just about every day on my side of the island)

UPDATE to an ancient thread:

AS time rolls on I noted the folowing chrome items peeling:

1) Brake lever

2) Rear Shifter lever (front OK)

3) Right fork leg around the fender mounts (left side OK)

4) Slight corrosion on the clutch master cylinder in the deep areas where the chrome is weak.

OBservations: monthly I polish the bike, including the chrome, then apply a silicone-based protectant to displace the moisture.

The chrome that peels (off aluminum... only) has only nickle plating, then chrome, with no copper base. Could it be the Moco has cheaped on the copper to save some money yet again?
