Warranty Question
« on: August 21, 2009, 05:08:47 PM »

Do I need to have my maintenace done at a qualified HD dealer in order to stay protected under the HD warranty?
There us a nice shop close to home but not a dealership I would like to do business with them if I could.
Please let me know - Thanks

In spite of what the dealer may say, the anwer is NO!  You do not have to use their labor, parts nor fluids.

Document your maintenance, however.

Don't forget to put you mileage on the receipts.

I may be wrong, and I'm sure someone will let me know, but I think even on the application for the extended warranty it says something about allowing the service to be done elsewhere so long as you keep receipts and dates of when the work was done.

The more enlightened companies state these things correctly in the owner manuals, but with H-D you have to go in already knowing your rights under Federal law.  Look up the Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act and you will find that you do not have to have them do the maintenance, and you do not have to use their fluids and parts.  If they want to limit you to having the maintenance done with their products and by them, they can only do so if they provide those parts and services free of charge.  Don't hold your breath waiting on H-D to provide free maintenance.

It's funny how different companies do these things.  Just picked up Momma's new 2010 Edge yesterday, and looking through the maintenance and warranty booklets it was very refreshing to see an honest presentation of your rights.  Sure, they "recommend" having your dealer perform the maintenance using Ford parts and lubes, but they come right out and say that you are not required to do so.
