Broken Exhaust Stud on 06SG
« on: August 23, 2009, 05:39:09 PM »

Got to the last stud and it broke. About 3/16's left out of head. Has any one had to deal with this? I plan on drilling it and using an easy out to remove what's left. I don't think this is going to work though. So I am asking now for help.

one broke on my RK then we decided to replace both of them. we welded a piece on to it to get it off and the stud broke off in the head ! ended up pulling the head and have it tapped. It ended being kinda expensive....oh ya I also thought it would be time to have the heads worked and switch to cometic gaskets !!  thought that would make me feel better about the whole thing !!

yep, happened to me a couple years ago, then, while using the ez out, it broke too, and you can't drill that-case hardened. so I drill a new hole and tapped, right next to damaged one. round out the hole in the flange and rotated it till it cleared, alot of cusing went on but when finished it worked fine

Best thing is to get one of those special jigs to line it up while you drill and use carbide drill bit. I tried the titanium coated ones once but they all broke off. Ended up with helicoil. (Sp)? anyway not a fun job.

Do you know an outlet for the jig?
Kind of a pisser. Three studs came out relatively easy, and then..........!

Got the tool from George's Garage for drilling out the stud. The tool worked perfectly, but I was unable to get out the remaining stud with an easy out. So I installed a Helicoil. I installed the stud but have found that my drilling the larger hole for the Helicoil was slightly off center, I mean slight, so I will increase holes in exhaust flange ever so slight, and wham bam thank you ma'am, I should be riding tomorrow, at least my wife hopes so.

Thank You All! The Exhaust is back together. My wife has given me till about noon to have the bike ready to go. Should not be a problem. I just need to put the tank back on and the bags, spray it off and hopefully go for an uneventful ride to Daytona.
