Will my IPOD plug into the stereo?
« on: December 03, 2005, 10:23:06 PM »

Is there a connector to plug the IPOD into the Stereo? Has anyone done this? Of course someone has, what a stupid question.

Yep, just go to your local Radio Shack and get a male to male 1/8 stereo patch cable. Plugs into the aux jack on the front.

Just got my Nano and cord last week and it all works fine............just the one cord.  Then had to go buy the windshield pouches to carry the Nano in. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Yeap, after you plug it in the radio will stop at an AUX option as you right-thumb through the modes that it won't when nothing is plugged in to the auxiliary jack.

My cord is long enough to put the IPOD in the right lower, works fine and I don't need to be messing with it when I'm riding anyway.

Yep, I have one of those long cords, too.  However, I do not want my cord rubbing against anything........paint or chrome.  Experience tells me that it will even dull chrome after a few thousand miles........so I just didn't want it touching the bike at all.

A word of caution. There are two types of iPods: The Shuffle or Nano versions, which use flash memory. And the iPod (all generations) and the iPod Mini, which use hard disks. While the flash memory should not give you any problems with the device attached to the bike, the hard disk versions should rather not be firmly attached. This is just to be on the safe side. If you want to use a hard disk iPod on the bike, you could use the longer cord, and simply keep the iPod in your vest or jacket pocket.
Ride safe!

I have my IPOD mini with the internal hard drive and have it mounted to my handle bars.  I have not had any problems with it in its holder.  Here is the holder that I bought for my bike.  I also ran the wire up along the handlebar and then out under the radio so the wire isn't flopping in the wind.  I used on zip tie to attach the wire to the clutch line so it doesn't flop around.

There is another alternative to the iPod & cord: an FM transmitter.  Griffin makes one that connects into the top of the 3rd and 4th and possibly 5th generation iPods.  It uses an FM band to transmit a wireless signal to the same (unused) band on your radio thus eliminating the patch cord.  I use this setup myself and have had very good luck with it.  When the ol' girlfriend is perched on the back, I give her the iPod to control what we listen to (usually not a problem because we both like the same music).

At this time, though, I don't think a transmitter is available for the iPod mini, Shuffle or Nano.

LT,
I have the IPOD with the Griffin Fm transmitter on mine as well, I set mine into the leftside bag of the triple windshield bag, no problems with the reception and is easy to reach to use its controls [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] I also set-up a triple outlet 12v supply in the chopped tourpac, so when the battery starts to fade I put it there in a leather carry pouch that's is big enough to carry multiple items. Big plus is no cords either way interfering with my bike  [smiley=drink.gif]
I tried the input jack at first and used it only as long as it took for the FM transmitter to arrive, cords bite, and I figured that in short order the rubber plug that keeps the weather seal would soon fall off with constant use. ;)
