As many here know I had to travel from Florida to Georgia for my CVO Street Glide a couple of weeks ago.
Of course we got into the sales tax subject as part of completing the paperwork. Georgia now has a state law the requires them to send the title information directly to the new owners resident state. Then the resident state contacts the new owner and lets them know where to go to pay the tax and complete the registration and tag transfer of of the bike.
It seems that lots of people were buying bikes and saying that they were going to register them in another state. Eventually many of these bikes were really tagged in Georgia and the sales tax was assumed to have been paid earlier. So Georgia lost a lots of sales tax revenue. Hence the new law.
I agree with one of the earlier postings about the tags.
I put my Florida tag on the bike and the Georgia temporary tag in the hard bag. I am carrying a copy of the bill of sale, my transferred insurance, and my old registration with me. If I get stopped and the officer figures out that the tag doesn't match the bike, I can prove that everything is mine and if he is so inclined, I will put the temporary tag back on the bike over my Florida plate until I receive word from the Florida DMV.
I don't know if you have seen the new temporary plates but if I was a police officer I would pull you over based on the plate alone. It has the dealer name but no tag numbers, issue date or expiration date on it whatsoever.
It is interesting to note that I have received my insurance confirmation, a HOG new Bike Purchase Gift Certificate, my Extended Warranty Card and insurance binder BUT no contact from the DMV....yet. I'm still waiting to give them some badly needed revenue..or so they say......
