I've been hearing about quite a few motors shelling due to cam bearing failures lately... :nixweiss:

A new motor could be nice, especially if it's $50 on the extended warrenty plan. Good luck!

Ernie the problem is the stock cam bearings. They are like the cam tensioners. They don't last!

The verdict is in.

   Motor is toast.

Rear inside cam bearing disintegrated, no needle bearings in it at all, they are all ground up in the motor..........

Original OE Cams?

Warranty Adjuster was in today, agreed with Mark & approved a new motor, but...  The warranty company still wants a comparison of costs for rebuilding vs the new motor, so a few more days of waiting before we know what will happen.

Got the Sportster out today, what a little rocket, forgot how much fun it is to ride.  However I do feel like the jolly green giant on it.  For you that haven't met me, I am 6'4" so the Sporty is kinda like a little toy for me.

Wouldn't the warranty company want to go with HD rebuiling program which is much less cheaper than replacing new or rebuilding at your dealer?

forget it - there's nothing left undamaged to start a rebuilt on  ;)

Oh, yes I forgot of course - some chrome covers may be intact :D

I've had exactly the same "pleasure" - there was virtually not even one single part in the oil-circulation not beyond repair ...

The HD rebuild progaram accepts any basket case.  They disassemble the motor and pool all the parts.  You get new cases with VIN and they build it from rebuilt (tested ) parts.

Unfortunately all parts tested in the program have to be outside  HD's specs for replacement. So things like a crank could still barely fall within their specs since they have extended the tolerances, and not be replaced. Hopefully a new engine will be authorized for Bill.

So the latest....

Warranty inspector agreed with Freedom, new complete motor is the right answer.
Warranty company still wants a comparison of rebuild cost vs new
All documents delivered today, answer by Fri or Monday
But, to get the new motor when approved, Freedom has to send the complete crank & heads to HD for a VIN verification
They will not replace the motor without the parts & VIN verification even though the warranty inspector saw & verified everything.

So, the saga continues....
