Crank Position Sensor Destroyed ---- Actually the motor
« on: August 25, 2009, 02:30:49 PM »

Interested if anyone else has had this happen.

Crank position sensor has been hit by the crank enough times that the end of it is shreded and the sensor body is bent enough to cause the oring to leak.  It had to be pulled out with pliers it was so bent & damaged.
Puked oil everywhere until it quit running.

We were on a two day trip and were about a mile from the top of  Sonora pass when the bike started missing, then it quit.  It started right back up but then quit again a couples time.  The final time it was dead.  We were 200 yards from the top of the pass.  I was able to turn around and roll back down the road and off on a paved spot.

From there it got fun.  I had to go up to the top of the pass, then climb up a hill side to get where I had any cell service, only analog roam but that was good enough to call HOG Roadside Assistance.  Glad I have the upgraded service.  The tow guy said it would have been $450 tow from there, they paid for it all!  He took us back to Jamestown.

Of course Jamestown HD was closed by the time we got there Sunday & Closed on Monday.  We spend the night & will get reimbursed by the Roadside Assist plan.  We got a friend to come from Reno on Monday with a trailer & got the MC to Freedom Cycles just as they were closing Monday.

I was over talking to Brad this morning about what he found & he said he had never seen this before.

One thing I can say is the bike is now well oiled with Red Line as the damage was so extensive to the sensor it was pumping oil right out of it all over the bike.  Quarter car wash here I come when I get it back.

Haven't seen this but it sounds like your crank might not be straight.  I believe that the tolerance for the 06 is .0035.

sounds like there are some other pieces in your "oil".

Be prepared for a fatality and have them check cam-bearings and other possible sources for "stray metal".

I don't see mention of which model and year you have.  This wasn't all that unusual in '07, with the "flexible flyer" cranks Harley unleashed on an unsuspecting public.  If your flywheel has been hitting the sensor, you can pretty much assume your crank is toast.  As noted above, they need to tear it all down and thoroughly go through it as there is liable to be extensive damage.  If it's still under the 2 year factory warranty, perhaps the MoCo can be persuaded to replace the entire engine like they have for others in the past, rather than replace all the pieces.

Bill, that's too bad. Especially happening at the top of a 9500' pass! Let us know what they have to say about it. Roger

This happend on engine failure number one on my 2007 CVO Ultra. In my case, i was on the freeway and noticed engine loosing power, then started to lose oil pressure. When i finally got of the freeway and stopped i noticed oil puking out of the sensor area. Dealer said crank whacked the sensor. Motor company replaced complete motor. Had another mishap with piston slap noise. Dealer never told me what went bad with that motor but the Mo Co ended up putting another new motor. Needless to say, I ended ownership of that POS. I would say your crank shifted, but cant say why. but i would guess maybe cheap China built cranks now days   :nixweiss: :nixweiss:

Oil looks like glitter, maybe more like fools gold along a stream bank.  Then there is the fact that with the plugs out & the bike jacked up you can barely turn the motor using the rear wheel.

Primary side getting torn down this afternoon, should have the final diagnosis by tomorrow.  MC is at Freedom in Reno with Brad doing the work himself.

More to come   :drink:

With Brad working on it, at least you know that you'll get a good job.  I still say warped crankshaft...

The same thing happened to me last year while driving on the Cross Bronx Expressway.  Oil was spurting out like crazy.  There was no internal damage and I still am not convinced what caused the Crank Position Sensor to fail.  I now carry a spare one.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news. BUT YOUR MOTOR IS NFG!!!!! Time for a complete rebuild. The flywheels are way out of true. Along with that goes the bearings, and the list will go on and on and on!

GOOD LUCK!

The verdict is in.

   Motor is toast.

Rear inside cam bearing disintegrated, no needle bearings in it at all, they are all ground up in the motor.

Bright side, the cam chain tensioners at 33,000 miles are like new.  Thank you Red Line Oil.

Waiting now for the inspector to come to Freedom, Fri or Mon, look at the motor & authorize a new complete motor.
