The Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge
« on: August 25, 2009, 06:32:41 PM »

So, I've signed up for The Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge. It's a 7,000-mile endurance ride from Key West, Florida to Homer, Alaska. The ride begins on June 20, 2010 and you must arrive in Homer by July 4, 2010. The first rider to get to Homer without breaking the rules -- and there are many -- wins $500,000 in cash or Alaskan Gold!

I've got a few posts on my participation on my weblog, Rick Rocks On.

Has anyone else here heard of this? Anyone else interested? Anyone else signed up?

Yup, some friends of mine spotted this a couple weeks ago.  You gotta be really serious 'cause the entry fee is serious coins.  What do you plan to ride?  I'm thinking about a Buell Ulysses XB12XT to ride up there if I go.

From what I've read, it was supposed to happen at a previous date and got moved, and if the event never happens, there is no refund of your $1000 entry fee.  They are also able to change the checkpoints at their discretion in the middle of the thing and you don't know where the next checkpoint is until you reach one.  They also leave it to their discretion to set up random checkpoints along the way.  You'll be sleeping next to your bike for 14 days and going up against some of the most hardcore bikers in the world.  It was originally set up so that those finishing would be entered into a drawing for the winner, but now it's turned into a race, so they could easily toss someone in around the finish line to take a cut and never give the money away.  That's just some of what I had read, and the analysis of some of it from others that have looked into it.  It's not even a consideration for me.  It does sound like it would be an adventure, but certainly not a leisurely ride.  I'm looking forward to hearing about it after you ride it and I hope you win the half million.

Unless you think you have a serious chance of winning this thing, couldn't you have even more fun riding it without the hassles of checkpoints - and pay for much the trip with the saved entry fee?

If you try to go it on the cheap, that $1000 may cover sleeping in a bed all 14 days, as well as having time to actually sit down and order a real meal to eat.

I meant a guy that is doing this run.......7000 miles.....winner take all 500K.

"On June 20th, 2010 some of the world’s most fearless riders will come together for a 7,000+ mile run from Key West, FL to the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska. Across two countries we will ride and test our will as warriors in the Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge!"

I would love to try it....but then again I would not make it past "Hogs Breath" in Key West.

Superstition HD in Apache Junction Az has an 03 Sportster on display that made the entire run.  Still with the original dirt from the trip. saddle bags & bike packed just like it returned, smelly clothes and all.  If it's there the next time I gon in I will take a picture.  Can you imagine that trip on a rigid motro Sportster?  I can, I have 30k miles on my 03!!

The one house........is that his house, or a relatives?  And where did the money go for the other charities?
