Oil fill research
« on: August 26, 2009, 12:53:01 PM »

We discussed this issue many times here, advice was given by myself and others to fill it with 3.5 qts and top of as necessary. The procedure of letting the bike warm up really was never brought up as we figured it was understood to do it. While talking to a friend of mine he said he always let the bike warm up before dumping the oil. And then it dawned on me. The bike needs to come up to temp at higher rpm's than just at idle. Need to ride it and bring it up and then dump the oil, you will get more out of it, thus, being able to put more clean oil in it.
If you take a cold bike and drain it and then add 3.5 qts, you will be over about  16 oz.
I wasted a case of oil doing this but am sure this is how it should be done.
oh, word to the wise, wear gloves when removing the plug, it's hot, but not too hot for Fire Marshall Bill

Always drain the oil hot, and not just because you will necessarily get more out that way.  That depends on how long you let it set there and drip.  The real reason to drain it hot is that you want to drain out all the contaminants that are in suspension in the oil before they settle out.

As you noted, be careful 'cause that drain plug and the hot oil will burn you if you let it.  One of these days I might see about getting a Fumoto drain valve to fit the bike, like the ones I installed on my autos. Much neater operation, and you can even get one with a nipple for a drain hose.  Just have to make sure there is clearance and it won't get clipped by a curb or pothole.
