o2 sensor re-installation question
« on: August 27, 2009, 04:14:21 PM »

Hello Everyone,

I am replacing my header with a non-cat, Jet-Hot coated one today. :orange:

I read the service manual (bad idea!) and noted that it says to install a new seal washer.  Can I reuse the old one?  If I have to replace the old one do I have to cut it off?  I tried to unscrew it and did not come off.

TIA,

Charles

I have routinely reused the seal washer when removing and reinstalling O2 sensors without any issues. Be sure to reinstall with anti-seize compound.

I installed new seals when i Jet Hot coated my pipes. You need to cut them off with a wire cutter. They won't unscrew.

I just did my non-cat conversion yesterday. Had a little trouble mounting the header, but an extra set of hands helps with that. Regarding your question about removing the O2 sensor seal washer. I very carefully put mine in a vice, put a small screwdriver between the washer and the sensor and twisted the screwdriver, then I rotated the sensor in the vice and did it again till I made the complete circle. I had to move up to a slightly bigger screwdriver for the second go around and after that they threaded off. I agree with one of the guys who said you probably could get away with reusing them, but if you see a new crush washer(part no. 27714-06) compared to the one that has already been torqued you will probably want to change them. Good Luck CAHDBIKER

I've reused them several times. I Don't think you will have a problem, especially if this is your first time removing.

The part costs a whopping 49 cents.  (Something you almost never see at a Harley dealer.)  You should go buy a couple just for the thrill of making the parts person walk all the way to the bin and get them, write the ticket, and process the payment.  It has to be costing the dealer money...

I called my local HD dealer about the part.  I was told they have never ordered them.  I am the type of person to pickup small parts like this and get several spares.  I like having them around and it comes in handy when I work on the bike and screw things up.  Saves a 90 mile round trip drive.  Typically I would not mind the drive if I was on my SERG but in this type of case it is usually lying around in the garage disassembled.

Same here.  went to three different HD shops and not one of them had ever ordered them.  reused the originals and all is fine so far.  I do believe in replacing small parts like these though.  The mechanics I know taught me that this is cheap insurance to prevent returns and do overs.

Old seal washer will be fine.
What I find important is running a thread chaser through the bung...especially on new pipes.
This gives a smooth run down when screwing in the sensor and final torque feels right.
As said above, use anti seize.
