Idle down trouble on '09 CVO Ultra
« on: August 27, 2009, 06:21:25 PM »

I've got a 2009 CVO Ultra Classic and have a tuner and Vance and Hines headers installed. Bike is quick and runs great, but I've had intermittent trouble with the bike idling down really slow when decelerating and pulling in clutch. Or after riding for about 30-45 minutes and getting the engine pretty hot, will shut the bike down for 10 min. or so for a beer... Upon restart, the idle stays at 1800 rpm or so and does not want to come down for awhile. Local dealer mechanic says he has seen this issue with some of the new CVO's with electronic throttle. Anyone out there have same problem, and how did you fix? Info would be MUCH appreciated.

If the throttle is slightly twisted during shutdown it will reset you idle speed. Just make sure you don't have the throttle open slightly at shutoff and problem should go away.

I considered that but am almost positive the throttle was completely shut. The problem drives me nuts becsause it seems to be intermittent. To be honest I think the electric throttle modules have a completely different behavior than a conventional cable throttle, slower idle down may just be a characteristic but I'm interested to see what others say.

Next time you get the 1800 rpm idle, try cycling the ignition cycle without starting 4 times.  This was a pretty common problem when the 08's first came out.  There was a download that minimized it but didn't eliminate it.  It is most common when coming from a carb bike and blipping the throttle when starting or shutting down.  The ECM gets fooled into thinking that idle is a different rpm than normal.  4 cycles of the ignition without starting clears the condition.  As far as the slow idle down, it is possible the 2 are connected.

I had a similar problem a couple of weeks ago, idling at about 1800 rpm as i pulled off the freeway to get gas. We made several more stops, the final one being a nearby dealer, when i started up for the service manager it idled fine, go figure.

Fly by wire baby! Wait till the electronics screw up and you get WOT at the wrong time.

its happened to me a few times on my bike when it was bone stock, coming off the highway after an hour and it takes a few minutes for the rpms to drop down to idle.

You are not alone in having this problem. My Springer has been doing the same exact thing. I thought it might be the power commander because to be honest I didn't notice it before then. It also has the same problem you were talking about with the engine not getting down to idle quickly when I pull in on the clutch. If you find out anything please let me know.
