Need a Radar Detector Mount!
« on: August 28, 2009, 11:12:48 AM »

I just got a new '10 CVO Ultra Classic, Woo Hoo!! I would like to put a Road Tech Radar & Laser Detector on it, but I found out they have been discontinued.  :'( I think I have found a radar detector, but I can't find a mount that fits the fairing on these bikes. Does anybody out there know where I might be able to get a mount? It's P/N 91673-04 and is called a "Road Tech Radar and Laser Detector Mounting Kit". A new one would be nice, but I would be happy to find a used one that's complete and in good condition.

TIA for any help.  8)

Why bother with that verpriced junk? Get a Valentine 1, and a good mount and you'll be set.

I've already got an Escort 9500i, but I never notice when the dang thing is going off. I guess I can get another mount and some kind of speaker to hook up to it. It would probably be a lot less expensive to move it back and forth between bikes.

I just thought it would be nice to have one that has a more integrated look (and a built in speaker). As it is, I have the GPS hanging off one side of the handlebars, and the radar detector hanging off on the other side. It just doesn't look as clean as it could...

Try eBay.  They always have the road tech detectors.

If you're going to put the fairing mount on, I hope you know a good upholstery shop.  They are going to have to make a cutout in your dashpad to make it go around the mount.  I would recommend using a handlebar mount, like the RAM mount or something similar...

I use the Techmount with the supplied velco and it works great. I swap it back and forth the the truck every day and it is perfect. If I don't want to bother with the V1, I just fold down the chrom techmount and it doesn't stickout or look out of place.

The V1 behind a fairing is plenty loud, but they also have a auxillary remote for bikes with plug-ins for ear phones, etc. I even saw someone who makes a visual do-dad that mounts to your helmet too.

HD NET Shows a list of stores that have them but when I called I found out there computer list was wrong and there not there. I then started call little out of the way stores that showed zero in inventory and had them check the shevles. I found two last week for new bikes doing that.

OK,  if you're a "neatnik",  this might not work for ya.........but if you are taking an extended trip and want some radar protection,  you might try this.  I have an '09 Ultra Classic CVO.  A couple of months ago,  I took a trip and used the cigar lighter inlet for power and stuck the suction cup bracket onto my windshield toward the left side just above the left-hand windshield bag (of three).  With a male section of velcro on the bottom of the detector and the female section glued to the top of the left-hand bag lid,  the detector held on just fine and was not gonna shake off.

:( Problem became apparent when I got caught in a thunderstorm........didn't take more than 5 minutes of heavy downpour and the Escort went t*ts up.....blank screen, nada.

So,  for my Sturgis trip,  I sent the Escort in to be repaired (new mother-board),  and when I got it back,  I took a zip-lock sandwich bag and made a slit for the suction-cup bracket and another small cut in the side for the power cord connection and another cut in the bottom of the bag so my velcro connection could be maintained........This worked OK,  got caught in several storms,  but no problems with water due to the baggie enclosure.

Did it look a little "hokie".........YUP,  but it gave me the warnings I was after and no tickets............ :nixweiss:

Thanks for the tip Dave! My BSR got on the phone today and found both the detector and the mount within two calls. Our dealer had used HD NET and supposedly called about 10 dealers... I think my BSR mentioned that the first dealer she called did a quick look on HD NET and gave her the name of the one that actually had the parts we want.

I found an old thread that tells how to modify the dashpad too. One of the bikes in the thread belongs to a friend of mine, so I can see how he did the modification. He modified his dashpad himself. It's been awhile since I've seen it, but I do remember that it looked good.
