Need some measurements!
« on: August 29, 2009, 02:00:47 AM »

I bought a set of used nostalgic style saddle bag guard rails (aka Road King) for my 08 Connie.  Rather than replace the filler strip between the saddle bags and fender with the chrome ones I would like to drill and cut the ones I have.  Yeah it sounds like a butcher job initially, but I think if done carefully it could turn out very well.  If not I can always buy a set of the chrome ones.

Here is what I need.  If some one could measure their filler strip and tell me the width and depth of the notch and the distance up from the bottom of the strip to the bottom of the notch I would be grateful. My intent is to file and paint the edges and then cover the edge with a very small split rubber hose similar to vacuum lines.

Also I am missing one of the chrome allen screws and washer from the clamp at the front.  If someone has an extra one of these I would sure appreciate it.

Thanks much!

I would be interested to see what that would look like. Some has to take the first step :cherry: :2vrolijk_21:

Took me minute there ;D  I knew you were pulling my leg, but darned if I could see where 8)  Of course if your name is indicative of something that would indicate a Jeep driver as opposed to a HD rider????  Connie was one of the names that were offered up as a suitable moniker for the Copper Anniversary edition.  BTW I'm looking for a good back seat for my 05 Rubicon!

As an addendum to the original request, if somebody could check with their local HD shop and see if they have a set of the chrome filler strips in stock and get the measurements from one?  I've tried the Fairbanks shop and they don't stock them, order item only.  I need your help here folks!  Thanks much!!

Don't have the any measurements, but did it on my 07. I like it better than the slotted. I'm at work so I'll try to post a picture later. I've got another one to do later this week or next and will try to get something to help you out. I took some of the black door molding and put around the edge to give it a cleaner look.

That is "eggsactly" what I am planning on doing.  It looks great and I like the idea of using door edging as opposed to slitting some tubing.  I would still appreciate the measurements when you get around to doing the next one.  Thank you very much!  Brett

Finally got around to installing the saddlebag guards and cutting the hole in the filler strips, albeit not without a great deal of trepidation! :o.  After the initial measurements I drilled a pilot hole near the back of the notch and used a 3/4" hole saw to drill the hole.  I then used a Dremel saw to cut along the straight lines.  And yes after filing everything smooth to remove any burs I painted the edges to prevent any future rust.  BMW Butch sent some great photos which helped immensely.  I'll attempt to post some photos of my installation.  Butch noted he had to bend the filler strip to get them to fit in, but I found  if you slip the filler strip over the guard first and then install the guard and strip at the same time it will fit right in.  You'll have to replace the torx screws where the guard mounts with bolts as you won't be able to tighten them unless you can come up with an 90 degree torx tool.  I went ahead and replaced the torx screws on the filler strips with chrome bolts at the same time just because!  The black door edge molding worked great and the ones I bought already had glue inside so didn't need any weatherstrip cement or glue.  The original torx srews were a locking type of threads so used Locktite on the new bolt threads to hold them rather than an additional lock washer.  If anyone wants to try this and has some questions I'd be happy to help out!
