I think you absolutely did the right thing!  It's all about what you feel confident on.  Comfort is secondary.  If you always have little second thoughts dancing around in the deep dark recesses of your mind, they will instantly affect your reaction in the event of an emergency.  The Road King is a great looking bike.  I drooled all over the 1999 Cobalt Blue color and wish they would have brought it back for an Ultra Classic.  As far as the batwing fairing goes, to me that is the "looK'.  It may not be the most efficient for all cases, but when you see one coming, there is no doubt what you are looking at!  Enjoy your new bike!

It's hard for me to visualize apes on a Street Glide. The bag wing fairing is designed to deflect wind and weather off the hands that are positioned by the stock bar. I too would be a little confused trying to pilot that setup with hands high and bat wing low.

Not everybody likes fairings.  Any type, fixed or handle bar mounted.  It's not uncommon.  So don't feel like you are missing something by not liking it.  I personally can't go without a fairing.  I've been riding baggers/full dressers since 1985 and wouldn't have anything else. Enjoy your SERK.   :2vrolijk_21:

I never liked the looks of the Tour Glide / Road Glide.  I always thought they were Fugly.

For two years I had planned to buy a 09 Street Glide.  Just knew it was the bike for me.  Fair looked very good.  For  me it seemed to be the right bike, something I could make a hot rod bagger out of.

I am so glad the SERG came out in 09, one ride on a Stock Road glide, had me sold that it was the better way to go.

My biggest isue with the Batwing is its too damn close after you've ridden a road glide
I agree, the fairing is way to close for me.

As for USA90, you are right, you have to feel comfortable on the bike.

The SERK is a cool bike, and I would have looked hard at them except it is to similar to a fatboy for me which I already have.  If I would have got rid of the Fatboy SERK would have probably been the way I went instead of a bike with a Fairing.

 8) I love mine. Never had a windshield or fairing before I bought the 09 SE Ultra. Still enjoy my bikes that put my face in the wind. But on the ultra i grin every time a bug splatters on that shield. ;D

I sat on a road glide today to get the feel vs the Street Glide and I could see that it would have been a better option, but I know I did the right thing getting the SE Road King.
I spoke to a lady at a dealership today that said her husband did the same thing , got a Street Glide and sold it the next season for a Road King.

That's the beauty of riding a Harley everybody has different likes and ways of making it their own!  It's nice to hear from everybody, as a new member as soon as my bike comes ( hopefully Friday ) I'll show you a photo of me with it vs my Street Glide and you'll understand why I made the decision I did.

Only thing I knew I'd miss was the radio and I solved that problem with this man and his custom made windshield systems, he's very nice to talk to and backs up his systems if anyone is looking for a good clean set up.

I went RG because I do not like the batwing and love the RG.  It is an acquired taste (RG).

Why not go back to the Vrod but get the one with the RG fairing....  difficult to find but they are out there..

Hmmm,

with bikes I believe it's more or less the same story as it is with guns: not really 100% logical, allways emotions and feelings involved.

I inherited a beautifully handcrafted, perfectly balanced 7 mm SE mountain-rifle from my father. She was really a beauty - but I knew he never had used her after 2 times missing with the rifle without obvious reason. So the weapon was "under suspect" and before I took her out the first time I had a very renowned gunsmith check her. He gave her a 100% health-certificate so I felt obliged to try her - and as I was a student those days and the rifle was well worth 2 Harleys I was not a little bit proud owning her. To console my bad feelings I took her to the range and had excellent results, 5 shots in a coin.

So I took her to the alps, where my father's old companion had invited me. Believe it or not - first evening I shot over easy 150 m at a chamois and failed. For the rest of my stay I borrowed the guides rifle and never missed again. First thing back at home was to sell the beauty.

The guy who bought her was just ecstatic about her and told me he never missed with her ...

So get rid of a bike you don't feel 100% comfortable on and don't look back  ;)

Don't argue, don't ask - just sell it for your peace of mind.

Yeah... the RG is unique in fairing design as compared to the rest of the 'Glide family...

I rode my 08 SG for 21K miles, and LOVED it after moving up from the Fatboy... Loved the radio and cruise control, but the 96" was lacking in power...

Dropped my deposit for the SERG and waited... and waited... and waited... when I finally took delivery in Feb this year, it was well worth the wait...

I love the open area in front of me as compared to the SG...

This week I rode all 3 bikes again... Still like each one in thier own way... but now the SG dash is jst too close for comfort.

The reason I left the Vrod is it had a tendency with all the CVO power for the back wheel to kick out on me..I also missed the saddlebags
I saw some of the Vrod's with the fairings and hard bags , very interesting look but once again like you I'm not into the fairing

usa90, you did right by trading but it is definitely a preference issue.  I traded my 08 Anniv Edition Road King (which I thought was the perfect bike for me) on my 09 SERG.  I loved the look and feel of the "classic" bike on the RK and that I could strip the windscreen and have an incredibly beautiful machine.  However, now that I have my SERG, I could not go back to the RK.  Handling, performance, comfort (and tunes to boot!) make this a better bike for me.  If I could have kept both I would, but I would make the trade again exactly the same.  Fairing is my friend now, and I hated it before taking a test ride.

ive had a windshield since .... 84....

im 6.1 and look well over the top of a standard ultra windshield, am thinking of getting a taller one so that i just look over to lessen the tendency of bugs to bounce off the windshield and end up in my helmet.... ick.

i can see the ground about 6 ft in front of me - and thats about right.

if i was short enough, or had the seat low enough that the fairing was in my lower vision i think it would be really irritating.

ive seen a lot of folks on street glides who look like they are looking "just" over the top of the 3" high wind deflector - that to me would be way too high and way scary.

so i think id tell shorter folks to get a rk and adjust, trim, etc the windshield to be actually right.

Yeah I know that unfortunately that is the reason I didn't like it, I'm too damn short...I love my RK now but of course now I'm having some transmission issues , always something
