Inside the 2010 headpipe.
« on: September 04, 2009, 08:40:19 PM »

Here's a view that's rarely seen that the techies might find of interest.

A pic of a 2010 head pipe before I welded it back together after cleaning the cat out of it.
I stuck a pair of sharpies through the 02 ports to show the 5 inches of seperation before
merging of the exhaust takes place. Tuning problem?
My quess; low speed maybe. Wide open throttle, no way.

Dyno tuners, place your bets!

The cross talk issues will be at low engine speed (<3000) when reversion is the highest. The rear cylinder sensor is the one that will get the worst of it since it clearly is out in the open for exhaust gas to get to from both cylinders. The front cylinder is at least up the pipe a ways.

Thankfully,
I have had no experience or unwanted discovery associated with a "butt Plug".
Was once offered a high speed corn dog that I smartly refused, but that's another story.

The more valve overlap you have the greater the problem becomes....I trully believe moving the 02 bungs up stream about 3 inches or so will cure the problem with the stock pipe and no cat.....just my opinion.

I can picture two HD engineers sitting around after work, dunking a few beers;

"hey man, if we put the sensors in the pipes just inches from the cat, that will really reak havoc with those aftermarket tuner guys, LOL... Gulp, Gulp, yea! and let's switch over to lambda and really mess with them... Cool! I think this will work..."

I like a good conspiracy theory as much as the next guy (actually, I probably like them better than most), but I sort of doubt the placement of the sensors was strictly chosen to mess with the aftermarket and the dyno tuners.  Don't forget, the first thing the MoCo has to worry about is meeting emission standards, and I seriously doubt they would jeopardize that just to mess with the tuning folks.  And let's also not forget, they themselves make plenty of dinero selling those "racing use only" super duper tuners (cables/software/maps/training disc extra), along with all the other "racing use only" parts.

Next time you have nothing to do slide under your truck or car and scope out the various sensor locations on that exhaust system.  With the advent of heated sensors, it was no longer necessary to locate the sensors near the heads to get them up to operating temperature.  You will find them well downstream of the heads, near the outlet of the manifolds (head pipes).  Keep looking, and you'll find additional sensors as well, as in directly in front of the cat and directly after the cat.  Those you don't have on your Harley yet, give the EPA a few more years and you probably will.

If the sensor location becomes an issue for tuning with performance parts installed, I don't see it being a big problem drilling a new hole and installing a new bung upstream.  Stick a plug in the original bung, modify the wiring if necessary, and keep on keepin' on.  The folks at Fulsac will probably make it a package deal, remove the cat and relocate the bung all at the same time.
