last time i was at the gas station, my gas cap broke...this is an '08 fxdse2...the top chrome part came off, and there was a spring and a black plastic part left in the tank...has anyone else had this problem?...the bike has 13k miles

yep, dropped one of mine a few months ago. You're hosed. HD doesn't sell the replacement parts necessary to repair it. If you look at the mechanism, it is comprosed of 4-5 parts that allow the ratchet portion of the cap to work. You likely broke some of the little tabs that hold the parts together. I tried repairing mine with some strong adhesive but it did not work. Took it to the dealer and they told me I was out of luck.

I would think it should be under warranty so how would you be out of luck?

Missed the warranty part. If that covers it, you're in luck. I was just referring to the repairability of the gas cap.
