I agree that you should NEVER let  tire get down to 1/32".  Also, as the back tire wears, it get a bit square so changing the tire will make the bike ride and handle much better.

I averaged around 9k on the rear and just changed the front at 26K  - that's with the stock Dunlops. I am trying the Metzlers this time around to see how they work out, so far they feel good. I haven't had much of a chance to see how they handle the wet weather yet.

They handle great in the rain.  Actually, they just plain handle great.  Just mind your tire pressure; it is higher than that of stock tires, and if run too low, will cause the sidewalls to heat up and fray.  Also, keep a close eye on the sidewalls for cracking.  These aren't the same fine tires we used to get from Germany anymore.

Are you talking about the Metzelers or the Michelins?

Off topic:  In historical military terminology, Warrant = assigned to perform a specific job--but as a mustang, I enjoyed your chosen definition.

Metzelers.

That was a quote I saw written in scroll over the desk of a long since retired mentor many years ago.  I enjoy it as well, though I make no personal claim as to it being my work.

Para 3.9 of the most current (11 DEC 2007) edition of DA PAM 600-3 provides the following definition:

"The Army WO is a self aware and adaptive technical expert, combat leader, trainer, and advisor. Through progressive
levels of expertise in assignments, training, and education, the WO administers, manages, maintains, operates, and
integrates Army systems and equipment across the full spectrum of Army operations. WOs are innovative integrators
of emerging technologies, dynamic teachers, confident warfighters, and developers of specialized teams of Soldiers.
They support a wide range of Army missions throughout their career. WOs in the Army are accessed with specific
levels of technical ability. They refine their technical expertise and develop their leadership and management skills
through tiered progressive assignment and education."

The publication goes on to define each WO rank individually.

Never take a chance, 3/32 at a minimum, much more before a long trip.

That's about what I have, but I am changing them out because it's time......the rear tire is pretty flat and the front started cupping. 14,000 miles.

Or, you could do as I did on the way home from MV and run over something sharp enough to cause a flat.....that'll get you a new tire immediately.  :'( And now I've got wheel weights instead of dyna-beads on the rear of my Huckleberry.  :'( :'( Arrrrrgh.  spyder

Yeah, I heard that.
Never had a blow out and not looking for the experience.

2 wheels is all you get, I would rather change them out now.

Went to the dealer today and complained about the cupping on the front tire, called MOCO and they are replacing at no cost. I have 14,000 miles.

I think it all depends on the dealership you work with. HRHD rocks!!

I thought that was more then fair, I was going to buy them tomorrow either way.

Running D402's on my SEEG, I get 10-11k on the rear tire and 20k+ on the front, while not going below 3/32".  Mostly one up, mostly sane speeds (less than 80 mph).  Next change I plan on trying the E3 Dunlops, better tread pattern that shouldn't track rain grooves and other road variations as much as the D402's do.

I personally believe the 1/32" spec is meant to make tire life look better than it is, and it should not be taken seriously.  Sure, if you never ride in the wet you don't necessarily need tread, but unless your crystal ball is much better than mine it's pretty hard to guarantee you'll never get caught in the rain.  I use 1/16" as my personal absolute minimum, and normally change at 3/32".  I would want considerably more than that if I were heading out on a long trip.  JMHO.

Jerry

I put E3's on my '06 haze....Helluva tire ...No tracking, handled great...wore like Iron...
