Failing tail lights
« on: September 08, 2009, 01:28:28 PM »

Was riding the other evening and my friend behind me tells me ALL my tailights are completely out. At the same time i notice the security light in the bottom right hand corner of the speedo is ON steady, not just flashing. As we continued to ride the tail lights went on and off several times for no reason. When they were on the security light was flashing as it normally does, when the tail lights were off the security light was on continiously. All other lights were working fine.

Not sure if its a related problem, but when i go from low beam to high beam with the head light, the CD player omits a very quick snapping sound. Can anyone offer some help??? Thanks

So many problems, so many options...

It really looks like a grounding issue with all the different items going off and on.  The CD with the high beams, all would lead me to a/multiple ground issue/s.

Take a jumper and connect it to the ground on the battery and start clamping it to other parts of your frame to see if it corrects any of the issues.  If you find something that helps, start looking in that area for loose or unplugged harnesses.

Good luck and let us know what you find out.

Another way to do a quick test is to use a 12v test light.  Clamp the clip end up to a known ground in the front fork area, as an example, and then touch off on the battery ground.  With your light and everything turned on, when you hit the missing ground, the test light will light up trying to connect the circuit.

My SERG left me walking on my first trip to Daytona this year and it started with the radio poping and going off.I made it to the beach but the next morning it went about a block and  quit running all together.Rossmeyers came and picked me up and the first thing they checked when they got it to the dealer was the main ground under the battery on the triangle plate.I was back running in 30 minutes and the service mgr said it was a common problem with our bikes.Good luck.

After reading this thread, I suspect my right tail light is failing.  I will be on when I start the ride and some time during a ride go out.  I had someone follow me home today to let me know about it.

I got home and pulled right saddlebag and reseated the plug and it was still off.  Pulled the seat and jiggle the wires, still off.  Scratched my head and flipped on the power and it was on.  The problem at this stage is having the light off at the dealer.

I was able to cure mine after some digging, take the seat off and look in front of the batttery, down about 4-5", use a flash light, there is a vertical metal plate, with a threaded stud coming off from it, it has 2 wire connectors underneath a nut, on my 09 SERG the nut was about to fall off the stud, and the wire connectors were just loosely flopping around. It was difficult to tighten the small nut as there is alot of stuff packed into this area, but once i tightend the nut all my tail lights stay on, and my CD player has stopped making an occasional crackling noise. I had the same fear of not getting my problems to show up when i was going to take it back to my dealer in Barre,VT.   Hope this helps.

I know that Wilkins HD is one of the best in the area.  It really tells you something when the owner is a 80 year old lady who sells bikes!  I wish more HD dealerships were family owned and the dealership was more conveniently located for me.

If you have ever bottomed out, chances are pretty good your tire has rubbed the wires under the fender above the rear tire.

Royal PITA but that will cause the same thing you are describing.

I agree Wilkinsons HD in Barre, VT has excellent service, i went there for my first check up and the 80 year old woman who is the owner, came over and sat next to me and thanked me for making the drive north from Bennington. She discussed how greatful she was to have her staff and stated her place operates based on the tuff times she encountered in her business over the years......great lady!!

Mine had left turn signal, that if I used it, it would not work again, and tail light left side would go out.  Dash security light would come on and stay on.  Shut the bike off and restart all would be normal until I used left turn signal.  Dealer found a bad ground in the front left turn signal...
