I purchased a 2004 FLHTCSE (Blue and black) in April 04. Within a year, I noticed white spots forming in the paint on the top left side of the tank. I thought maybe the clutch reservior seeped fluid onto the paint but I could not feel it through the clear coat and noticed that it was under the clear coat in the paint itself. The Harley rep looked at it and called it "solvent pop", a defect that can form even after time. He stated that small bubbles work their way up through the paint in time due to possibly the primer not being dry at the time of paint. Harley replaced the tank under warranty in 5/05.

In late 2006, I noticed the type same spotting forming in a different location this time, on the top right side of the tank. Within a few months it got worse so in 5/07, I took it back to Harley to have them look at it. It had only been around 18 months since the tank was replaced to when the spotting started again. And this was a totally different tank! The rep looked at it and said it was solvent pop again but due to the age of the bike they would not goodwill it. The bike only had 4650 miles on it and has always been kept indoors. I have a 7 yr extended warranty on it but I guess that doesnt cover cosmetic. Has anyone else experienced "solvent pop" in their paint jobs, especially the black / blue 2004 CVO paint jobs?

Thats not a goodwill replacement!

Thats a warranty item and HD knows it as it is caused by defective workmanship by the description!

Yes both the saddlebag lids on my 05 SEEG (Red) popped. I went by the dealer and got into a screaming match with idot service writter (his second day on job and he already knew it all). I sanded them out, had a buddy blend the color in as the damage was only to part of both lids and then re clearcoated them, sanded/buffed them and no one could tell. It never did it again, luckily, and now it has a new home.
I was able to keep a friend who was buying a new bike from buying from this dealer and he did tell them why, after they had done everything except sign the papers, so I got a little bit of satisfaction.
I will never understand how/what makes the service writers think they are doing me a favor for warranty.

not solvent pop..that only occures when paint is drying right after spraying ...to much heat during bake. or to much matieral is applyed.also to fast of reducer or hardner.. no way its solvent popping now..  let me see a pic.

There are about six or seven of these - at first glance they look like <very obvious> watermarks where drips have dried (except the bike would have to have been on its side when the water dried, as they run nearer to horizontal rather than vertical!).  They don't wash off or polish off though!  The marks are actually lines of very small pores through the clear coat, (some of the bigger pores are the round dots in the photo) and you can just about see the blue being a little uneven underneath if you get the light in the right direction. I suspect they have been sags, or runs, in the blue, that have been rubbed flat before the clear coat was applied, and the blue having been thick there, the paint has not cured properly before the clear coat being applied.  The defect is likely caused by the solvent in the edge of where the sag, or run, has been coming out over time.  It leaves these little pores that fill with dirt and polish so the lines start to show, as in the photo.
