I just purchased this unit from Kuryakin about 2 weeks ago. I think there are +'s/-'s to each one. I do not hard wire my Zumo 550. I always have used the external 12v and aux plugs. I have used the handlebar mount for about 3 years now.

FOR ME I like the tank mount better because FOR ME it is a cleaner look. I run the wires so that they don't rub any painted surfaces (thanks to Chip for helping me with that one back on the blue smurf). I keep my wires as short as possible so I unplug my 12v when getting gas so it doesn't stretch the wire too tight. That's the only down side of this unit for me.

If you buy this unit you will already have the spare fuel door as you replace the entire door with it. I leave my GPS on my bike at all times because it's mainly my go to source for MP3's.

A word to the wise on any GPS mounted any where on your bike. Remove the GPS when you park the bike, even if you have it secured. A friend of mine had his Garmin 550 mounted using the fuel door mount and never removed the GPS when he stopped for lunch or what ever. I told him he was nuts that some day he was going to come back to his bike and find his GPS gone. Sorry to say as of Sunday he is looking not only to replace his GPS but now he needs a fuel door. The thief just ripped the entire fuel door off along with the GPS.

The bad thing is he did not have a security code entered into the 550 so now the thief can use it.

Looking down at the tank at a GPS is similar to looking down at the tank at a map bag - neither one a good idea as far as I am concerned.

Possibly Harley will take a cue from car manufacturers & put the GPS on a little electric riser, with a trap door in the fairing for it to rise out of & then back into, completely hidden when not in use.  All with the touch of a switch.....




I'd be happy if HD just made  a GPS thats worth a chit!  Worry about where they put it later!

Sorry to hear that. Thats one of the reasons I replaced the push button on my fuel door back to the stock key lock. A thief can still get it but he/she has 4 nuts to take apart and they won't get my fuel door! I did order the thumb screws so that I can easily remove though just to be on the safe side. My only worry is that the rubber plug that covers the connections broke off a while back and I have nothing to cover it. Guess I could just use a ziplock and rubber band in a pinch?

Rob contact Garmin (early in the morning to reduce wait time) and they might send you one (free) to replace it. If I remember correctly there are two small screws and that piece comes with some adhesive on it.... real easy to replace.
